How many are you planning on buying? If not a ton, those are both pretty good rates. USA Volleyball is pretty good on ball bags and carts too.

finger: 10 for now and about 28 for our next fall season.
I just wanted to make sure I was getting the best deal before I placed my order.

I'm assuming you're buying men's volleyballs (Pro Touch/V58L-3) versus the womens/girls model (Super-Touch/IV8L-3). Ten @ $36/ea is a solid price IMO. Incidentally, have you ever noticed some boys programs use the blue/white NCAA ball (IV8L-N)? Sometimes it appears to be purely color-scheme motivated. Cracks me up, haha. I love to be the one to point out to them they're using "girl" balls

Am I the only one who didn't know there were different volleyballs for men and women?

Hmmm. You + the directors of the boys programs I've seen using the blue/white balls ;D (only kidding)
The women's balls are lighter, and less diameter, I believe. And even well-inflated, they still feel softer. They're much, much lighter...you can tell immediately when you bump them.

I was of course looking for pro-touches, the soft touch feeling like they are inflated with helium.
By the way if you check the molten website they have the NCAA ball and now a "composite leather" Please dont tell me it is going to be like the NBA b-ball fiasco.

If it's done right I don't think it'll be a bad ball. The Mikasa MVP200 (Olympic ball) is composite leather and it's an awesome ball to play with. The surface has super grip, which complements those w/ a fast setting release IMO (amazing how fast you can shoot them around). The Mikasa is also friendly to those that know how to correctly put topspin on the ball...it's all about the grip!

They should be exactly the same size and same weight within normal manufacturing tolerances. Here's the NCAA women's rules: The Molten ball used for the NCAA women's tournaments is the IV58L-N Super Touch. I've seen versions of the Soft Touch, and it's considerably "squishier". The typical ball used for NCAA men's is the Pro-Touch - usually a red/white/blue model. I recall a few years back I saw a photo of a red/white/blue Spalding TF4000 used in the NCAA men's VB Final Four. I looked up Molten, and wasn't aware that they're a Japanese company. Their product offerings are in sporting goods and automotive parts. www.molten.co.jp

Oh - I looked up the current USA VB rules (which the NCAA men's rules are based upon with some modifications such as 30-point rally scoring).

Its circumference is 65-67 cm (25.6” to 26.4”) and its weight is 260-280 g (9 to 10 oz). Its inside pressure shall be 0.30 to 0.325 kg/cm2 (4.26 to 4.61 psi) (294.3 to 318.82 mbar or hPa).

So if I'm reading right the info BearClause provided, there is no difference, right? Men just usually use a different color?

Actually there is a total difference between the two balls, yet I don't think USAV has a required difference for the balls women and men use. The women's ball has a cotton sub layerbetween the leather and the bladder, while the men's is a nylon layer. The theory is that nylon is more durable for the way a man hits, with that being said... Anaconda Sports has a pretty good price for multiple ball orders. For any orders above 24 balls the price is as low as $34 a ball, for the "all white" Super Touch (cotton sub layer) women's ball. Still on the expensive side but doable with solid fundraising.

Incidentally, I can recall many players complaining about using the Spalding ball for the NC2A championships (Hildebrand most recently comes to mind). I've played with it -- it is more slippery and spongy/dead feeling than a Molten. Makes no sense to me to use one ball during the season, then another for the Final Four. Ah, the wonders of marketing and contracts....
