Waves Win Ninth Straight
Pepperdine sweeps Stanford in MPSF play.
Feb. 22, 2007
MALIBU, Calif. - Paul Carroll's 15 kills on .423 hitting helped lead the top-ranked Pepperdine Waves to a 3-0 (30-14, 30-22, 30-23) victory over the Stanford Cardinal Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play.
With the victory, Pepperdine improves to 12-1 (10-1 MPSF) and has now won nine straight matches. Stanford falls to 1-15 on the season and 1-11 in league play.
Carroll led all players in kills and accounted for two of the team's eight service aces in the match. J.D. Schleppenbach had nine kills to go along with a team-high three aces. Greg Gaudino had eight kills, two aces and five blocks, while Tom Hulse led the way with seven blocks.
Matt Ceran was the lone Cardinal to reach double-digits in kills with 10. Evan Romero had seven on minus .250 hitting. Pepperdine's 13.5 team blocks limited Stanford to minus .043 hitting for the match.
Pepperdine overcame a 3-0 hole in the first game of the night by going on a 16-4 run. During the run, Carroll notched his first ace of the night and Schleppenbach blasted three straight. After consecutive hitting errors by the Waves made the score 23-13, Pepperdine closed out the game with a 7-1 run that included three blocks.
Stanford led 3-0 for the second straight game in game two only to see Pepperdine answer with an 8-1 run. The Cardinal cut the deficit to one at 11-10 off a kill by Ed Howell. A kill by Gaudino on the ensuing play started the home team on a 7-1 run that made the score 18-11. The Pepperdine advantage held up when the Cardinal were never able to make a run giving the Waves a 2-0 lead in the match.
Pepperdine completed the sweep only trailing once in game three at 1-0. The Waves used a modest 3-0 run in building a five-point 15-10 lead and were not challenged after four straight Stanford errors pushed the lead to as many as 10, 28-18.
The Waves have a quick turn around, hosting Pacific tomorrow night at 7 p.m.

Looks like Pepperdine's Carroll could be a POY candidate My vote would go to Winder. Without him they were good, with him they seem to be great.

As good as those two are and as good as Pepperdine is doing this year you have to give it to Patak thus far. He is by far the biggest threat in the college game today hands down.

Have you seen Patak's ace #s?! He's averaging over 1 a game (66/59, 1.12)...freakin' unreal! 5.9kpg at .359...superb numbers, especially considering he hasn't racked 'em up against EIVA or MIVA competition.
That being said, I do agree we are talking about three legitimate candidates. I said Carroll early on, but Patak has really continued to produce (he's really fun to watch, btw). Uber-middle David Smith should even get consideration IMO.
If the Waves win it all Winder could get it (might be the right thing to do, seeing as he is a JR and Carroll has 2 yrs left). My vote though would still be Caroll. Unless UCSB wins it all...then it'd be Patak. And BartK at least 2nd team AA.

Interesting thing about Carroll--I've only seen him once during the BYU match. I didn't feel like I was in awe, though I really should've been. It's weird--he gets things done, but is not flashy about it. I think he did have some ka-booms, but strangely, they just sort of happened and then next play started. Players like Patak and Cala seem much more imposing for some reason.

Stanford just bored him to death, LOL.
Seriously though 'fan, I've seen him umpteen times since he was a frosh...he's completely the real deal. Crazy as it sounds, I would take him over Patak (1 and 1A more like it). Check his output against challenging opponents...he's incredible. Only thing wrong is that he's missing Team USA eligibility....

romero -.250 on 32 swings? how did he stay in the match? His PASSING....I didn't see an error in the depaartment given to him...That might have just been the reason.
