Just listened to the very end and heard CSUN won in 4 games. Dan Rhodes is playing again (after spraining his ankle at UCLA). Sounded like it was Rhodes vs Patak.
Not sure of the scores of the match.

The Matadors end their two match losing streak, wins in the comfort on their home court and the Gauchos extend their losing streak.
Tonight's score: 23-30, 30-23, 30-27 and 30-26
CSUN played better than last week with more energy, determination and better passing. It was a duel between Dan Rhodes(CSUN) and Evan Patak(UCSB) but CSUN's passing and defense was better than UCSB. I liked CSUN's starting line-up tonight and I totally dig Ali'i(CSUN) being the libero tonight just digging after everyball, getting pounded by Patak and the other Gauchos and managed to keep the ball in play - good job. The OH's did well, the connection between Sean Pedersen and the MB's worked well tonight.
Good job Matadors.

Was there from 1st serve, but had to leave at the end of game 3. Rhodes looked great, as did Patak. Vance started to heat up offensively after starting slowly. Waite brother 2 of 3 looked pretty darn good, although UCSB had some lucky digs of his attacks (big guy gets up pretty darn well, btw). Ali'i started along w/ frosh S Pedersen (wicked pace jump-serve when it clears the tape, incidentally). CSUN really picked up the energy after the game 1 loss. Patak had 5 aces when I left by my count (3 games). He's got a great chance to end the season with his 1+ ace/g stat intact. Great moment of night: One of EP's sharp angle hits from RS got popped up by cornrows (Ali'i), but then he popped it off of Waite's dome on the overpass. Sweet Can't wait to see the box.

EPatak = 27-5-45 .489, 6 aces, 8 digs, 5 block assists. Quite the stat sheet stuffing. 35.5 pts in 4 games. That's an average of 8.875 pts/gm...not too shabby

That's a great win for CSUN. Waite played well against UCI this last weekend. It appears that he's taking advantage of the PT he's now getting.
My question is, "What's happening to UCSB?" I saw them earlier in the season and they just seemed unstoppable. When vtalkers were referring to the Gauchos as UC Patak they couldn't have been more correct. All they needed was mediocre play from the other players combined with the play of Patak and it would seem like they were contendors. I'm just curious as to others' thoughts on this.

Their middles were solid both offensively and defensively, but they're still searching for more production from the rest of the supporting hitting cast (their OH's). Berman is hitting for a great percentage, but lately I think they've needed more production from him. And that 2nd outside hitter spot is still weak, as I noticed earlier in the year. Richman went 2-2-15 .000 tonight, even getting yanked for Zakarian (who had the funniest over the block, untouched waffle kill that Waite managed to reach, like 11 feet in the air going left back, haha). Musical chairs with Norton and Brockman at libero didn't seem to help much either (I think Brockman should just keep the job).

My question is, "What's happening to UCSB?" Ken Preston happened, and that is why UCSB will ALWAYS be UCSB, no matter who is on their roster.

I totally agree, Skyn! Shoot...who buries 1st team AA Alfred Reft on the bench and doesn't give him a sniff? C'mon man...I'm always surprised when kids agree to SB. He's done nothing but play mind games w/ Kowalski his whole career. Him and Gregory on the other side of the house are the perfect pair.

Well, I don't necessarily blame Preston for Reft's situation. Mansfield was an excellent libero and had a phenomenal frosh season, so Reft was doomed if he stayed anyway. Besides UCSB was never a good fit for Reft. Reft was a hard worker, good kid, non-partier, took volleyball seriously. Basically all the things a UCSB player is not supposed to do. I'm surprised Kowalski stuck it out in Isla Vista as well - since he definitely does not fit the mold of a typical UCSB player. He must be in a degree program he really wants to be in at UCSB, or else he should have bailed years ago.
Andy Riviera, another example of a terrific kid with massive amounts of volleyball talent who never got the chance to prosper because he didn't fit the mold, and didn't subscribe to the party atmosphere that has surrounded the whole UCSB program for years. And Preston does little to nothing to curb that kind of thinking from his players.

Amen, Skynard. IV has its charms but it definitely is not without its pitfalls. Seems that the UCSB volleyball icons are entrenched come hell or highwater. Ridiculous.

Wow! Great win for CSUN. They have been playing poorly for a few weeks now. Patak is Patak and had a great stat night.
I see Rhodes also had a good night stat wise. I thought he was done from an injury!
Big night again for Lischer as well... One of the few middles in the country that every team knows is getting the ball yet produces every night.

Other middles in the country have been producing more, but have more help that Lischer does. Worthy of an AA discussion.
For example, the UCI middles...

Lischer should find room on one of the AA teams. I think the voting consensus is that Campbell turns out good MBs.
