a couple of thoughts:
1. allymcbeal: i thought the announcer was really good tonight. it was true the match was farely uneventful, and i think he did a good job of keeping the crowd entertained. My personal fav: "Webber on the backyard bar-b-que!"
2. Mac: maybe the back for Paul George was an issue, i noticed him mostly staying on the ground float serving (if not all all the time, i cant remember) but i know his jump serve is pretty effective usually. However, all the freshman on UCLA have been playing a significant amount of time. UCLA has been playing really well lately, achieving a number 5 ranking, with most of these same players on the court.
3. I think it was great that there were so many fans there at a So Cal match. It's especially impressive since UCI's basketball team was in their semi-final game tonight for the Big West tournament. The Bren center sure is a cool place for volleyball, 2008 NCAA tournament will be sweet.

Disappointing match! I'm glad I didn't pay for parking or ticket luckily. Where is the UCLA fire and swagger? I know they're young but I expected more presence on the court. Serving was subpar. I was very impressed with Kevin Ker however. His setting style is very deceptive...he does not give the location away until the ball is leaving his hands. His location will no doubt get better and more consistent with time. Middles were the biggest weakness for UCLA. Klosterman is a great player but he brings zero leadership to his team. That's where he's no Patak. I know he's quiet but he needs to step up in this department.
UCI looked good all night. Webber is hitting harder than ever! He had some HUGE bangs last night! Jayson is smart and consistent, Smith almost unstoppable, and the rest of the crew very solid. Asuka on defense was exciting. It's great to see a libero contributing so much and firing up the fans with his ups. UCI looks very confident going into the last part of the season.

Thanks rob for the tickets.
i think the anouncer is great. i've been to several other gyms (CSUN, UCLA, Long Beach, USC, Pepperdine), the UCI anouncer brings the most excitement to the match. BTW Rob, do you know if you'll be doing the final four next year at the bren? that would be great.
on to the game:
Klosterman needs help. he got a lot of sets and his fare share of kills, but he does not have the "just throw it up" ability like uc patak does to carry a team. in defense of klosterman, not many players have that ability, possibly just uc patak and cala from byu.
ucla served way too easy and poorly which allowed uci to run their offense. when uci can get a decent pass in, they always have 4 offensive options available (OH, Oppo, MB, and Back Row Bic) and it's just too tough for any team to defend againts such an offense. I would think it's just not particular to uci. but teams with athletic outsides like perez, cala, lotman, jablonsky, these guys give their team another attack dimension with the quick back row bic. pepperdine can stop this attack with their gigantic block, but smaller teams need to do it with tough serving. ucla served inconsistently last night and had 24 service errors in 3 games!
liberos asuka and ker were awesome. ker dug a lot of hard hit balls from jablonsky, and asuka made serveral full-sprawed saves often times 20 feet beyond the end line!
lastly, webber puts up a gigantic block. don't know if he got into the heads of the ucla outsides but they did not produce whatsoever.

UCI had an easy day in the office as Matt Webber and the boys trashed UC kLostermAn 3-0. It was a boring, one-sided, unexciting match. Not worth $16 (general admission + parking). Adding injury to insult, the announcer was very annoying. He tries too hard... Matt Webber was awesome and simply one level above everybody else. Dude, his wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am style is a beauty!!! Unstoppable. Unblockable. Unchallengable. God bless him. allymcbeal, the $16 is definitely excessive-- you could have saved $ on the admission-- tix were being offered here on v-talk by someone (see earlier posts). Boring, one-sided and unexciting might be too harsh IMO. There were some great rallies with multiple digs that woke up the crowd, and as you referenced in your post, Webber played awesome! Which brings me to my next point, the announcer. It was readily apparent that the match wasn't as exciting as all of us thought it would be and I have to give kudos to him for trying to spark up the crowd. The PA guy is on vtalk and is one of may people who want to see vball get more attention. If he's annoying to you then you're entitled to that opinion, but as a whole I think he does a good job (at least better than other places I've heard).

You know, I think you're right... the announcer did do a good job:) Again, sorry for being too harsh. I hope to see/hear him again in the near future Peace...
