Since Pepp beat UCLA tonight, does that put UCLA out of the MPSF tourney? Or is there still a chance they could get the #8 spot?

Since UCLA lost tonight, IF Long Beach wins their two remaining matches, one at home against Northridge, and the other on the road at UCSB, no matter what UCLA does, LBS wins goes because they beat UCLA twice. UCLA has matches against Stanford and UOP both at Pauley. All in all, it looks a little better for Long Beach State right now than it does for UCLA, IMHO! Anyway, which ever one goes they play Pepperdine in the first round at Pepperdine, so that will put a quick end to the season for whichever team it is! Right now the LBS men couldn't beat Brian's team!

Pepperdine owned the net , and both rotations had plenty of blocks , as Pepperdine outblocked the Bruins 17 - 3 . Every player on the Bruin bench got playing time as Scates and Company tried to overcome the Waves domination at the net . At times the Bruins looked confused and didn't know what to do or who was going to hit the ball, also their serving was off. The first game was played very tough and Pepperdine scored the last three points to win game one . The second and third games were all Pepperdine . Time for Chapel tomorrow morning.

It was a long night for the Bruins, and their bench trying to stop Pepperdine. UCLA might not make the MPSF tournament this year, since they still have two tough games to play...Stanford (with Toppel) and Pacific. As far as Coach Scate's comment concerning Pepperdine's "Chapel"meeting before the game...he should be very happy that BYU's Chapel session will meet Pepperdine's Chapel session next week...we'll see which team prays the loudest. Does this mean that Al Scates doesn't have a prayer this year? Actually, I enjoyed watching Chris Pena play. He was pretty awesome in the middle...real strong. Jonathan Acosta was very effective, but I didn't know why he was taken out. Rich Nelson dumped a few for points and did an adequate job setting. A bright spot was Paul Johnson...is he a freshman? The program didn't list any freshman - senior categories...if he is a freshman, he'll be a good one in years to come. UCLA hung in there for a while, but the Waves were too strong tonight. Question? Where were all the Bruin fans? There wasn't the usual big UCLA rowdies. I thought they'd be out in force for such an important match. They're not "fair-weathered" fans are they? What's your view on that, David?

I was there among the UCLA fans. Unfortunately, not much to cheer about after the 1st game.
Rooney is a monster. He looks like Player-of-the-Year to me.
Paul Johnson is a red-shirt Sophomore. He has had a few shots at the line-up. Scates keeps trying different people to fill Scott Morrow's spot. Tonight it was Johnson and David Russell. Against USC, it was Matt Shubin and Johnson.
Nelson had a couple of nice dumps for points, then he kept trying it, and got stuffed twice. But, I liked the joust he won.
Acosta has a couple of impressive kills, but his stats were 6 kills, 6 errors on 14 swings, and 0 blocks.
The Bruins can still get into the playoffs if they beat Stanford and Pacific next week, plus either Long Beach States loses one of their two matches (vs CSUN and UCSB), Stanford loses all three matches (vs. Pacific, UCI and UCLA) or UC Irivine loses both of its matches (Pacific and Stanford).
The Bruins can also get in by splitting their matches next week, and having Long Beach State lose both matches.

Thanks for your insight, David... I always enjoy your analysis of a team or match. Sorry I missed meeting up with you. Sometime in the future. maybe.
