LOS ANGELES–Juan Figueroa had 10 kills, 7 digs and 6 aces, while C.J. Schellenberg added 10 kills and 5 blocks to lead the No. 13 USC men’s volleyball team to a 35-33, 30-20, 30-24 non-conference win over Rutgers-Newark on Tuesday (March 13) in USC’s Galen Center. USC–which has never lost to the Scarlet Raiders in 8 meetings–improved to 8-11 overall, while Rutgers-Newark fell to 2-18. The Trojans have won 5 of their last 8 matches, while Rutgers-Newark dropped its 15th straight match. Hunter Current added 9 kills and 4 blocks for the Trojans, while teammate Luke Morris had 10 digs. For Rutgers-Newark, Nate Stott had 18 kills while hitting .412 and Eric Honsberger added 17 kills, 9 digs and 4 blocks. USC scored the last 2 points of the tightly-contested first game on a serving error and a combo block by Current and Matt Pavlovich. The Trojans opened up a 17-10 lead in the second game and were never threatened while serving 7 aces. In the final game, USC steadily battled back from an early 10-5 deficit and opened up a 20-16 lead en route to the victory. USC next returns to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play when it travels to UC San Diego this Friday (March 16) for a 7 p.m. contest.
