St. Andrews athletics announces addition of men's volleyball
March 23, 2007
LAURINBURG, N.C.—Men’s volleyball will start competing as an intercollegiate sport in the spring 2008 semester at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, announced Howard Reichner, athletic director.
St. Andrews Presbyterian College Athletic Director Howard Reichner has announced the addition of intercollegiate men’s volleyball to the college’s list of NCAA Division II sponsored sports that will begin competing in the 2008 spring semester.
“With the inclusion of men’s volleyball to the St. Andrews intercollegiate program, we are most pleased to be offering a varied number of sports of interest to the equally varied number of student-athletes,” said Reichner.
“Our expansion of the athletic program at St. Andrews mirrors the growth and progress we are experiencing throughout our college community,” said Paul Baldasare, President of St. Andrews.
Dan Kreiger, St. Andrews women’s volleyball coach for the past two seasons, will become the inaugural head coach of the men’s volleyball team while continuing to lead the women’s team.
“Our head volleyball coach, Dan Kreiger, has demonstrated a great ability to bring winners to our campus and I am confident he will recruit a competitive men’s team for 2008,” continued Baldasare.
The men’s volleyball program can add up to 15 student-athletes to St. Andrews that will begin competitive play in January of 2008. The Knights will compete as an independent institution in the East Region. Mount Olive College and Lees-McRae College are two in-state D-II schools that have men’s volleyball. Other East Region opponents include Mercyhurst College, East Stroudsburg University of Pennsylvania, University of New Haven, New Jersey Institute of Technology, and four colleges from Puerto Rico.
“It is great to see the beginning of a men's volleyball program at St. Andrews,” expressed Kreiger.
“We, as a coaching staff, know that there is a lot of work to do to get the program off the ground. It is going to be a challenge as a start-up program competing against other well-established teams, but there are plenty of talented young men out there who have not been given the chance to compete on an NCAA varsity volleyball team. We are planning to bring in a group of high quality student-athletes and be competitive in our first season.”
Coach Kreiger can be contacted at (910) 277-5429 or kreigerdl@sapc.edu if you are interested in competing on the Knights inaugural men’s volleyball team.
“Men's volleyball is experiencing significant growth right now and it is a very exciting time to be starting a program. We have experienced a high level of fan support on the women's side of the game. I am very excited to see how our students, staff, and community will react to the high flying, high speed game of men's volleyball,” concluded Kreiger.
St. Andrews is a four-year, liberal arts institution located in Laurinburg, North Carolina. SAPC has an increasing enrollment that is currently around 800 students and now offers 21 NCAA Division II sports.
