Sorensen Earns Weekly Honor
by Brent Johnson, BYU Athletic Communications
PROVO, Utah (Mar. 26, 2007)--Trent Sorensen became the fifth different BYU volleyball player to earn a weekly award as he was named co-Molten/MPSF Player of the Week for his performance last weekend against Cal State Northridge.
Sorensen shared the award with USC's Juan Figueroa. Sorensen joins teammates Russell Holmes, Robby Stowell, Yosleyder Cala and Yamil Perez to earn either MPSF or AVCA National Player of the Week honors.
Sorensen had a career weekend where he tallied 22 kills (3.14 kpg) on 26 attempts and no errors for an .846 hitting percentage. Sorensen came off the bench in Friday evening's match against Cal State Northridge to play in three of the four games. After coming off the bench in the first two games, Sorensen started the final two. In three games, Sorensen found the court on six of his seven swings for an .857 hitting percentage. He added three block assists and an assist on the day.
Sorensen's good play carried over to Saturday evening's match. He started--and went the distance--in all four games, destroying his previous career-high in kills. Sorensen knocked down 16 kills on 19 attempts (.842). The .842 hitting percentage in the second best mark posted by a BYU attacker this season. Sorensen added two blocks and four digs on the match.
Sorensen's .846 hitting percentage for the week marks the best weekly performance for a BYU attacker this season. His .842 hitting performance ranks fifth all-time in school history in a single match. His 16 kills and .842 hitting percentage are both team season highs for a BYU middle blocker.
