PROVO, UT -- No. 9-ranked Long Beach State (11-13, 6-12 MPSF) fell to No. 3-ranked Brigham Young University (18-5, 14-4 MPSF) for the second night in a row as the Cougars swept the 49ers 30-26, 30-28, 30-22. The 49ers have now dropped four consecutive matches.
Paul Lotman totaled 15 kills and six digs while hitting .385. Dan Alexander, Dean Bittner and Daniel Fabry all finished with seven kills as the 49ers hit just .156 on the evening.
Yosleyder Cala led BYU with 12 kills and a .474 hitting percentage and Ivan Perez tallied 11 kills with no hitting errors for a .733 clip. Yamil Perez issued 38 assists as he directed the Cougar offense to a .329 hitting percentage.
BYU used a late run to take game one 30-26. The Cougars jumped out to a 13-9 lead after a kill by Russell Holmes, but the 49ers came back to tie it up at 14-14 with a BYU hitting error. The game saw six more ties before LBSU went up 25-23 on a kill from Lotman, but BYU wouldn’t be outdone as they tied it up at 25-25 before going on a 5-1 run to close out the set.
In a closely played second set that never saw a lead greater than two points, it was BYU that came out on top 30-28. The two teams were all tied up at 23-23 before the Cougars scored two consecutive points, and the 49ers couldn’t come back as a kill by Ivan Perez ended the game. The 49ers finished with a .312 hitting percentage in game two, but the Cougars were better at .577.
With BYU leading 22-21, the Cougars went on an 8-2 run, highlighted by five consecutive 49er hitting errors, to take game three 30-23.
Long Beach State will return to action next week when they host Hawai’i on Friday and Saturday at 7 pm in the Walter Pyramid.
