LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UC San Diego men’s volleyball team dropped a hard fought 35-33, 30-27, 30-19 decision to No. 13 Hawai’i on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. UCSD went ahead 29-27 in the first game, only to see the Warriors rally and win a sideout battle, taking the game 35-33. UCSD and UH were tied at 24-24 in game two, but the Warriors pulled it out late. UCSD was led by Jason Spangler with 16 kills, while Frank Fritsch and Will Ehrman added 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Brooks Dierdorff had a match-high 48 assists and Eric Leserman had 10 digs. The loss drops UCSD to 5-19, 2-16 MPSF, while the Warriors improve to 9-13, 7-11 MPSF.
In the first game, UCSD led by a 23-19 score after a UH error. UCSD continued to lead until UH tied it at 27-27 on a triple block. Back-to-back kills by Shaw and Fritsch gave the Tritons a 29-27 lead. UH then recorded consecutive blocks to tie the match and a Hakala kill gave the Warriors their first game point at 31-30. UH would then continue to serve for the game, finally coming through with a block assist to close out the first game at 35-33 UH.
In the second game, UCSD rallied to tie the game at 24-24 on back-to-back kills by Ehrman and Spangler. UH then scored the next three points, putting the pressure back on UCSD. The Tritons came within 27-29, but a service error ended the threat.
UH controlled the third game, hitting at a .571 clip, and holding the Tritons to a .087 clip.
UH outblocked UCSD 22.0 – 5.0. UH was led by Lauri Hakala with 16 kills.
UCSD is back in action on Friday, April 6, when it plays at BYU. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
