CHICAGO, Ill. - - Despite winning the first game, the No. 15 Ball State men's volleyball team suffered a 1-3 (30-28, 29-31, 23-30, 19-30) setback at No. 12 Loyola's Alumni Gym Thursday.
With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 14-10 overall and 6-3 in Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association action. Loyola improves to 21-6 (8-4 MIVA) with the win.
Senior Nick Meyer (Cincinnati, Ohio/Moeller H.S.) paced the Ball State offense with 16 kills on the night, moving into sixth place in school annals with 1,316 career kills.
Sophomore Matt McCarthy (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton Warrenville South H.S.) also smashed double-digit kills, logging 12, to go along with his team-high .364 (12-4-22) attack percentage.
BSU junior libero Ian Peckler (Vernon Hills, Ill./Vernon Hills H.S.) finished the contest with a match-high 14 digs.
As a team, Loyola out-hit the Cardinals .258 (60-26-132) to .157 (50-30-127), while holding a 41-to-40 lead in digs, a 9-to-8 edge in blocks and a 9-to-7 advantage in aces.
Ian Anderson paced the Ramblers' offense with a match-high 18 kills, while James Grunst added 11 and Krisjanis Berzins logged 10.
The Ball State men's volleyball team returns to action Saturday night, when it travels up I-69 to battle in-state rival No. 10 IPFW.
