I had heard rumors of this going on. I also heard that the transfers were part of the deal for the coaches hiring at Wisconsin, i.e. no transfer, no job. Please tell me this is a joke.

This whole thing smells like the Badger campus the morning after a home football game.

Sorry, I know there's been a little shady stuff at Wisconsin the past couple seasons, but no way would they be engaging in that sort of obviously illegal behavior, since it's clearly a violation to talk to the player before she has a release. At this point, if any of those four were to follow the coaches to Wisconsin, particularly Wicinski, it presents the appearance of all kinds of NCAA trouble.

I heard from a better than good source that assts were involved in Wicinski leaving. Doesnt mean she is going to Wisconsin neccesarily, but they were players in her leaving.

Just another note;
When Wicinski went to the USA Volleyball tryouts, assistant coach Dan Pawlikowski accompanied her and helped work the event. The stories on the NIU Athletic website after she came back, really played up the part where she finally realized that she could hold her own against players from top programs. Pawlikowski was quoted saying the same thing, and said he heard it from other coaches at the event as well. I imagine the trip back to Dekalb inlcuded a few conversations about what could have been, and maybe what still could be. Maybe totally innocent and sort of an awakening for the player involved, but actions like hers have consequences for eveyone left behind and impacts to a program that can last for years.

Why would NIU release Wicinski to Wisconsin anyway? If those assistants are the reason for Wicinski wanting to leave, NIU should say you can go anywhere but Wisconsin to play. Yeah and then say "Nyah, Nyah, Nyah." Do you think getting even is what these programs are about?

That is really tough for NIU. While they graduate two good players, they still had a strong core returning. Now, it will be tough to replace two all around outsides while also having a new starting setter, although I think they will be fine there. I think that Wicinski is good enough to play for pretty much anyone that isn't loaded on the left side. There will be a lot of schools interested, I am sure. With no inside information whatsoever, I would wonder if Iowa State might be a good fit, since Wilms isn't playing, and I would have to think Minnesota would be interested, given their needs and lack of depth. I am not sure how well Wisconsin would fit, since it would involve one pretty good player moving positions, provided everyone is healthy. I think it would look sketchy if she ended up in Madison if the NIU assistants are indeed joining the staff here. Whatever ends up happening, I hope that Gooden can find a way to replace the losses and keep the Huskies in the hunt in the MAC. I have long been a fan of NIU, and I hope things go well for them.

While I agree that IF all this is true, it is a tough blow for Northern, I am not going to be as negative as some. There have been a few posts about how this will be bad for years and tough for Ray to recover from. I disagree. Ray is a good coach and with the movement of players within the DI ranks and the ability to get JuCos, I think he will be able to right the ship quicker than some think.

When Pete left NIU for Wisconsin in 1999, one of his players followed him to Wisconsin. NIU did not give her a release and she had to sit out a year. At the very least, the same should be done for Wicinski.
I can also appreciate the fact that Wicinski wants to compete at a higher level. But should not mean that she uses NIU as a stepping stone to reach her goals. I am sure NIU athletics does not want their athletes to view them a two year college to prepare them for a move to a stronger program.
I feel NIU should put the block on Wicinski to transfer to Wisconsin and set the precedent now for all their athletes that they may need to think twice before going back on their commitment to NIU.

This is collusion at its finest. You have four impressionable athletes, one of which has the talent at this point, who were manipulated by Dan and Coley with promises of grandeur. What these girls are failing to realize is that they were manipulated for the gains of Dan and Coley alone. No Lauren, no Wisconsin. As a former NIU volleyball player, I know for a fact that Coley is the mastermind of all of this. To start, the only reason Coley landed at NIU was because Ray wanted Dan. It is similar to the Wisconsin situation with Lauren. Ray valued Dan as an asset and coach, so he took the excess baggage anyway. The relationship between Coley and Ray was never that great. Coley manipulated players from the start, trying to fracture the team as Ray did what he could to keep it together. Ray did not want to make waves by creating tension with Coley, so he hoped she would leave at some point. Ray is not the type to create drama and bring negative attention to the program. He would rather handle matters internally than bring attention to himself and his team. Coley wanted the NIU job for herself. Her goal was to get the girls to verbalize their intent to leave in an effort to get Ray fired. This has been a systematic and well calculated maneuver by Coley to try and get Ray fired. To this point, Coley has ridden Dan's coattails in the coaching ranks. Without Dan, there is no NIU for Coley. Now, she used her sway with her husband and with the recruits to try and bring down Ray and NIU. I had the fortune of playing for Ray and was recruited by him and his former staff (who were great). I had the fortune of having Dan as a coach, but the misfortune of being around Coley. I saw her poison first hand and now see that the cancerous seeds she planted have now grown. It was once said that Dan bled for Ray, but Coley bled for NIU. It is now clear that Dan bleeds for Coley, and Coley bleeds for herself. this is harsh...if truly from an alum then i value the opinion

If Wicinski does end up at UW, it sounds like Pete Waite and the Pawlikowskis deserve each other!

It was once said that Dan bled for Ray, but Coley bled for NIU. It is now clear that Dan bleeds for Coley, and Coley bleeds for herself. Do not beat around the bush - tell us how you feel! While I think you may have some insight to the situation of NIU because you are an alum, I do need to take issue with one thing. None of us were involved in any conversation that may or may not have taken place regarding why this player is transferring. It could be similar to the Utah situation a couple of years ago where one of those coaches put a bug in a player's ear about how she could play at a better place than Utah and have a better chance of making national team if she did. She may have wanted to transfer before the assistant coaches discussed a possible move to Wisconsin. The assistant coaches may have never talked to her and all of this is wild conjecture on everyone's part. Most conversations on this board would go alot smoother if we would stop talking as if we were "in the room" when clearly we were not. Again, there is a lot of good insight to what you are saying, but I also get a sense of venom too.
