Great great read. I was in grad school at Georgia Tech when Ted Turner was just starting CNN. I remember going in on a tour with a bunch of journalism students and hanging out on the set for a little bit.
That was the time when Ted Turner defined Atlanta, it's brash can-do southern energy. And that was when the Braves were terrible. I once got to sit in his box at Fulton County Stadium with his then secretary, she was a neighbor of a friend, and she got us the boss's box. We would talk about certain Braves and Hawk players and she would say things like: oh I liked him, but Ted was messing around with his wife and he found out so he had to go.
One story had it that Ted had hired a pilot and he ran home to tell his second wife. Her response was that they didn't own any planes, so he went out and bought some. The pilot turned out to be his girl friend before Jane Fonda and she was the one who caused the divorce because Ted's second wife was always able to handle his infidelities but the pilot didn't like being the mistress.

What were the call letters for the tv station before becoming TBS? Remember what a big deal it was to have that station with the Braves on basic cable tv? I think we only had about 12 stations on cable - most local stations. I seem to remember WGN Chicago being around that time also.

Whatever Happened to Ted Turner? I though he had a facelift, colored his hair and changed his name to "Mark Cuban."
Seriously, though, interesting piece.

But I do know who had the call letters WTBS before Turner -- the MIT student radio station ("Technology Broadcasting Service"). Turner bought the callsign from them for $50K in 1979, allowing them to completely replace all their transmitting equipment. They are now called WMBR (for "Walker Memorial Basement Radio"). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WMBR
