Very painful for Russia I'm sure. You go undefeated in the preliminaries, narrowly beaten by the defending champs in the quarters. That's just too bad and very unfortunate for Goncharova, Gamova, Sokolova and the rest of the girls. Could this be the last Olympic Games of Soko and Gamo? How about Estes? Very painful for the Chinese too. Wang Yimei, Wei (setter), Ma (MB), Xu (MB), Zhang Xian (Libero) will all be retiring after London.

Take it for what it's worth, but one of the announcers (don't remember which) said Estes was retiring also.

Estes is a leftover from the USSR era. She is a freak of nature, due to the scientific experiments she engaged in, and can likely go another 4-5 olympics! ;D Hahaha she is soo good though! Very heartbreaking for Russia I hope Estes tries to make another Olympic run!! She can train for it in the quiet solitude of Greenville North Carolina.

"Russian star and FIVB hero Ekaterina Gamova bid farewell to the national team at the end of this match as she had announced before traveling to London the Olympics would have been her last appearance with the jersey of the “sbornaya”." www.fivb.org/en/olympics/london20…430&Language=en

I am missing a ton of great volleyball today, apparently. Ugh.

That ball may have been in, but you can't freeze the tape at that point. That could just as easily be the ball's shadow.

Russia desperately needs to develop some kind of middle attack. Their outsides are awesome but it's hard to consistently be that one dimensional against world class opponents.

Wang Yimei is just 24 or 25, but she has taken enough swings for a lifetime

Russia desperately needs to develop some kind of middle attack. Their outsides are awesome but it's hard to consistently be that one dimensional against world class opponents. That would entail overthrowing their entire volleyball philosophy and history. Not saying it can't or won't happen, but it will take a long time since their feeder system is geared towards that philosophy. As for Wang Yimei, China's training and development system is extremely physical. She may be only in her twenties, but her body is in the forties.

Russia is going to need some passing...Estes and Sokolova have stabilized it for decades
Now Kosheleva? Goncharova will likely move back to OPP

Goncharova will likely move back to OPP I'm not convinced Kosheleva has a long future on the court. Knees and shoulders and ankles can be operated on and fixed and managed. Backs are not nearly as forgiving once injured, and the potential lifelong disability/pain for pushing the injury is much worse.

By the way, if anyone finds a free replay link for this match, please post it. I will do the same. It's not yet on any of the sites I usually find replays. Missed it and would love to watch.
