USA has a re-match with Korea for a chance to play for a gold medal. The match will be held at 7am PT (have a heart attack with your morning coffee, west coasters!), 10am ET. Korea is so, so dangerous. They are a team with a lot of confidence, and Kim Y. K. If Larson isn't producing offensively, we need to bring in Hodge to maximize the left-side attack. Thoughts/predictions? My thoughts are that I am surprised given your experience and knowledge that you don't respect the fact that Larsons' defense was incredible. It irritates me that we comment on volleyball like a bunch of high school football players that just want to see kills but care less where the players are contributing otherwise.

The point of the game is to score more than your opponent. If you are struggling on defense, it can help to bring in a defender. If you are struggling on offense, it can help to bring in a ... offender? Hmm. Not quite what I meant to say. Anyway, if Larson was struggling in a match and the team needed offense more than defense, it might be useful to bring in Hodge. That already happened one time in these games. Who is to say it won't happen again?

I am a COMPLETE advocate for the all-around player a la Jordan Larson and Logan Tom, however without our starting setter who makes the team go at a quick pace, we may need more offense from the left. I never said Hodge should start the match, all I said was that if we're in trouble and need to put the ball away, Hodge may be appropriate as she was vs. China.

Or maybe just go to Hooker and Foluke more? We have offensive options, what we can't sacrifice is passing and defense. I'm not saying Hodge can't hold up her end in those skills, but right now I'm more confident in Tom and Larson doing those things. It'd be one thing if Hodge was as efficient out of system as she is in system, but she isn't. Hodge and Hooker are in-system killers, but if the passing isn't up to snuff, both become pretty average.

I think you mean "attacker"...
I think Korea is going to get a steady diet of Hooker, with a generous portion of Foluke mixed in. The left-side attack will be a side-dish.

Don't forget that with Hodge in, Hugh has LT shade a lot more towards her zones so that LT and Davis have to cover more court. Which will take a toll on both of them. The tradeoff is that if Hodge can replace Larson's offense AND offset the potential loss of offense from LT because she is doing so much on the defensive end, then the sub would be worthwhile.

Hooker and Hodge are devastating in-system. Not just technically attacking. They're certified killers, afaic.

Korea looks sharper than they did in the pool. I think the question is whether or not they can suddenly handle Hooker's heat (which is possible). If so, we will have a real dogfight. Otherwise I think they will bleed to death without winning more than a single set. My personal prediction is the latter -- 3-1 US.

I think that US will win in 3 sets...
I don't think many people seriously thought that Korea will end up in semifinals...Korea has "overachieved".
Korea did win the bronze in 1976 Olympics...If Korea wins the bronze this time, the Korean fans should be happy.
US should win the gold this time...Let's hope that US volleyball team does not end up like the US softball team in Beijing. Remember, US lost to Japan in the gold medal game. I just couldn't believe it...
Will US end Olympics winning all games without going to 5 sets? I hope so...
