Definitely a missed opportunity. That said, whoever the next coach is will have unbelievable talent to choose from. The USA will keep rolling !

I don't know much about the women's game, but it seems like we are pretty stacked with young talent. Hooker, Larson, Glass etc. Seems like things are set up to be pretty good until 2020. 2020? Larson will be 34, Hooker will be 33? Are you serious? Do women retire earlier? The men's team this year was older than that team would be.

Admittedly i did not watch the match but followed the scores and reports from fellow vtalkers. Todays events and to.some extent the men's match (13-9 lead) fully confirm what a mental and odd sport this is. At the HS, collegiate, profefessional and now witnessing these two matches i think many of us have seen or experienced this exact scenario. Bravo to the Brazil and Italy teams for not rolling over and seizing the momentum and swinging and serving free. I wanted so much for.our teams to win and i have no doubt we had the right rosters and coaches and better players but it didn't happen. It sucks. Second guessing is natural and probably cathartic for some.....its America. Proud of both teams and how.hard they fought....just didnt happen. USA vb is in great shape for many years to come

so Hooker chokes like she did against Penn State....Hodge and Larson couldn't play so the one player USA stayed way offensively that put this team in the best position ever that can play better than the libero, setter, and everyone else LOGAN TOM loose her gold medal....yup sucks for the best player USA ever had...and 2016 will not bring a good coach because USA sucks at that though they created the sport of volleyball How did Hooker choke against Penn State? The rest of our post is a mess. And simply taking out Hodge earlier wouldn't have changed THAT much.

"We invested our lives to try and win and we didn’t. Onwards." My problem with this quote is this: people who fully invest do not find another job in the middle of their journey. They are not distracted by anything except their mission. My issue with the coaching staff in this match is not whether we won or lost. My problem is that these players invested in this journey, got all the way to the Gold Medal Match, win game one, have one bad game and two starters get taken out. They got you this far, you got to stick with them. I understood taking Larson out against China, that was about match ups, those quick attacks behind the setter required a bigger blocker and she was overwhelmed. But, this was something different. If this was the team of players you select and put you faith in, then you need to show that faith all the way to the end. They set this team up to win only if everything went their way. They choose subs for situations.

Definitely agree that it seemed like Hugh went with Hodge /Arruda too early and then for too long, hoping for that same spark that they gave against China.

I thought it was a little like panic on Hugh's part which doesn't inspire anyone.

arcadelphia - Well said. Looks like Hugh spoke without really thinking or maybe he just really feels this way.

starsky - Part of the familiarity also is players you went to battle with. You develop friendships with them and trust them then they are not part of this team when they have been there for most of the quad.

May and Walsh went to a marriage counselor to wo.rk through their trust issues. Maybe this team should have gone to family therapy.

Well, now I understand why it is 10:40 and still no volleyball but with other finals still scheduled. A real disappointment. Given the performance of he other women's large teams, hoops, soccer, water polo, this would have capped off a truly amazing Olympics. Non the less, overall the US women brought it home in 2012.

and men's diving platform was worth watching. For once. And the women's 4x400 relay was great, too. Total dominance.
