So, what went wrong? (I really have no idea, since I relied on NBC's "coverage".)

www.teamusa.org/~/media/USA_Volleyball/Documents/Womens%20National%20Team/2012%20DataVolley%20Stats/8-11-12WNTvBRADataVolleyWeb.pdfit's in the numbers. Davis shanked 23 serves, Hodge and Larson hit .000 and passed almost as poorly, Destinee couldn't terminate on anything less than a one-on-one. On the Brazilian side, Jaque didn't get blocked once (truly miraculous if you think about it), and the Brazilian pins were almost flawless after the first set. Thankfully there are no dig stats here. And you can say it's about ball control, but we actually outpassed them over the last two sets and still got blown out. They were controlling digs better, but even off poor digs they were still converting. Outsides smartly went hard cross nearly every time to avoid Logan. D often set the block poorly, but at some point Davis had to start popping some of those up.

geez, you look at those numbers without the scores, and you might think brazil swept in three. as many have said, what a bad time for the usa girls to have a bad match. and while there are no dig stats, i would say that evaluating ball control includes digs and control of such, and we were clearly not the equal of brazil in this aspect

Postmatch dig stats on the BBC feed showed almost double. I believe it was Brazil 63 digs, USA 37.

My assumption is that McCutcheon couldn't have replaced Davis with Miyashiro, since the latter wasn't listed as a libero, without faking an injury, right? I know that some teams did have two liberos on their rosters.

A lot of discussion about actuals skills that broke down are definitely true:
Blocking was horrible. Passing was horrible. There is no way Davis passed as well as the stats imply. Serving has horrible. Brazil's block was slowing down every shot from USA.
To me, this was a case of a mental breakdown. In many ways, Hugh develops a team of "worker bees" who are on the court to do their job. If one or two are not contributing, he can bring someone off the bench or someone on the court has to be the "support" they need. This is wear team dynamics come into play. Everyone was too mentally focused on their own obsession with getting their life dream accomplished and unable to focus on getting it done on the court.
I've never seen Berg that emotionally isolated on the court (stealy look the whole time). Hooker was so far inside her own head. What happened to the emotional fireball that we are used to? Tom acted like herself. Even Dani Scott seemed so inwardly focused.
They could have really used some emotional venting. You coaches out there..... how to do snap a player out of an emotionally inward spiral? How the heck do you respond when the whole team is doing it?
Yes. Brazil played well, but I still say it had more to do with USA's poor performance. How many attacks by Brazil has 2 blocks up.... most of them! Yet our blockers or defenders just couldn't get a hand on the ball.

Serving. Passing. Defense.

How the heck do you respond when the whole team is doing it? The one firebrand player never got off the bench. The Russian's men's coach made significant changes to the lineup (moving the MH to OPP and the OPP to OH) after Brazil went up two sets. Everybody thought he was crazy (or just desperate), but it worked.

In general, you want an opponent to serve your libero...

Not really a surprise but seeing how both Jacque and Fe Garay played against the US during the preliminary round, these two gals just came out firing during the last three sets. Now, if both were struggling in serve receive, it would have been a different outcome (I think).

Brazil got stronger during pool play and onwards We made it through to the medal around but we were hot and cold with our playing during pool play and quarters, semis. After watching Korea/Japan's match, I thought how could Brazil beat Japan? Japan was awesome. But it has been great watching our USA team this whole season. It's been really my first time paying attention to international volleyball and our USA team. Thanks USA National and Olympic Teams. Got me thought the summer and excited for NCAA volleyball.

I think Hugh trusted his starting 6 too much and did not opt to bring anyone who'd make a difference off the bench but chose to bring those who'd complement as in-system subs and those who'd not bother/ challenge the playing 6. The two players I can see having an impact in this match were left home...
