After watching commentary for so many matches and now I'm about to start another season of commentary for my school, I have a question for the vt masses.
Can anyone explain the numbering system on setting? For instance, a certain set is called a 31 and correlates with a certain location. Can anyone give a listing of these or know of a good link for info? Thanks

Naming sets varies with every program. The system you are speaking of numbers the net into nine zones with the left side starting at one and the right side ending in nine. The setter is in six and the the first number indicates the zone. The second number indicates the height of the set. One is a quick set, all the way to five as a high ball. So a 31 would be a wide quick ball for the middle hitter or an inside quick ball for the outside hitter.

Some programs use letters for their quicker balls, a is in front, b is wide, c is just behind the setter, j is a slide. A ball to the outside pin is 1 and a ball that is inside is a 2 and the high ball in the middle is a 4. The right side will hit a nine for her high ball and 7 for her inside ball.

And other programs still have other methods and naming conventions, but I think the common language is the 1-9 indicating location along the net and 1-5 indicating a height above the net also thought of as the tempo of the set.

Hey Dorothy, As a coach it is in my nature to be a problem solver. While I admit I still have more to learn I really enjoy the helpful and the playful banter here on volleytalk. i know you've been taking a beating lately, but it takes all kinds of people to make a world.
