game recap from Pepperdine website:
PEPPERDINE POSTS THREE-GAME SWEEP OVER BYU SATURDAY NIGHT TO CLAIM REGULAR SEASON MPSF TITLE
Sophomore outside hitter Sean Rooney collected a match-high total of 16 kills on Saturday night and top-ranked Pepperdine defeated No. 3 Brigham Young by scores of 30-25, 30-18, 30-24 in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played in front of 2,453 fans at Firestone Fieldhouse.
Senior middle blocker Brad Keenan and sophomore outside hitter Fred Winters both collected 14 kills as the Waves clinched the regular season MPSF title for the second consecutive season.
Pepperdine improves to 22-4 overall and 19-3 in MPSF play, while Brigham Young falls to 19-6 overall and 17-5 in league action.
The Cougars had forced a showdown for the league title as a result of a thrilling 26-30, 21-30, 30-27, 30-19, 16-14 win over the Waves last night.
Both teams will host first round MPSF Tournament matches next Saturday night. If Pepperdine wins its first round match, Firestone Fieldhouse will be the venue for the semifinal and league championship matches on April 24 and 26, respectively.
The winners of the eight-team MPSF Tournament will earn the league's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships scheduled for May 1 and 3 at The Pyramid in Long Beach.
After struggling with its serve receive last night, Pepperdine passed the ball well throughout the course of the match and notched a team attack mark of .376. The Waves limited Brigham Young to a .170 team hitting percentage.
Pepperdine dominated play at the net, winning the blocking battle by a commanding 10.5-4 margin. Keenan paced the Waves with five total blocks.
Junior outside hitter Jonathan Alleman paced Brigham Young with eight kills.

Both nights were good matches, but tonight was a better one...not because Pep won, but because it was a dogfight. Contrary to the scores, defense and blocking were the reasons for the win. BYU is a tough team. Pep dominated the first two matches last night, but lost their momentum in the 3rd game to lose the match in 5. Pep's hitters, normally consistent, sucked big time in those final three games. BYU took advantage of Pep's offnight. Tonight, Pepperdine won because they were charged up. They knew the importance of winning the first seed in the MPSF. The crowds were treated to some long volleys and great defense on both sides of the net. Blocking was the key. It was an exciting match no matter who won. Expect BYU and Pepperdine to do well in the tournament. Enjoy the action, sports fans.
