Men's Volleyball Topples the Tritons for a Senior Night Victory, UC Santa Barbara 3, UC San Diego 1

The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos defeated the UC San Diego Tritons in a 4-game match, 30-23, 30-28, 30-24, 30-22, ending their season with a record of 10-20 overall and 5-17 in MPSF play. San Diego ended the season with another defeat, going out with a 6-22 overall record and posting 1-21 in conference.
The Gauchos ended the season with a bang, giving their seniors a victory for their final game. After losing their first game, it seemed as if the Gauchos were going to take the road toward something all too familiar to them, defeat. However, they regained their composure during the second game and won the final three. Adam Ulfers contributed to the victory with 16 kills, along with Nate Wack who finished with 14 and a .632 hitting percentage. Bart Kowalski, who is ranked 7th for services aces in MPSF, posted two more perfect serves tonight along with helping his team with 46 assists. Aaron Mansfield and Justin Adams successfully defended the home turf, Mansfield finishing with 14 digs and Adams with 6 blocks.
San Diego suffered yet another loss tonight. Although they were up to par with the Gauchos in blocks (12-11.5), the Tritons were out-hit 67-58. Still, Jim Waller ended the night with 22 kills (.364 hitting percentage). Setter Eric Perrine also made a tremendous effort with 51 assists.
The Gauchos say goodbye to their seniors, as well as their season, but it's not over for them yet. Coach Ken Preston is hitting the courts with them again for a few more weeks, in hopes of a stronger, more improved Gaucho men?s volleyball team for the 2004 season.
