Both are good, but in my opinion, Otte is better. Actually, I thought he was the top recruit available last year (over Nihipali, McKinney and many other great players).
As a High School and club player, he had a devastating jump serve, but for some reason I can't imagine, he abandoned it in favor of some lame "pooch" serve in the 2 SC matches I saw this year.
I admit I only saw Motter play once this year and that was as a libero which is obviously not his true spot.

having played against both players in high school and club i would say that both are terrific players. They both can pound the ball but i would say otte is a better and more consistent hitter. As far as passing goes motter is a better passer. They both have awesome jump serves. otte jumps a lot higher than motter can and does not tend to tank as much as motter. Motter is real streaky, but when he's on, he's awesome. Motter and otte can both play outside and RS, but motter can play libero and i have even seen him set before at JO's his junior year. But if i would have to chose someone for the collegiete game i would chose derek otte because of consistency.

Where has Motter been anyway? He was the "gem" of the recruiting class and he hasn't seen any playing time since he lost the libero position. I thought he would atleast be available as an outside. Has he fallen that far in the depth chart?

I also had to the chance to play against both of them at last year's JO's and I would have to say that Otte is the better player. He is in a lot better shape and is much more physical and athletic. Motter rides his emotions too much sometime and he is very streaky. Motter is not amazing at one particular skill, but is pretty well rounded. Otte is not amazing at any one skill either but he can hit pretty damn well. I would pick Otte.
