Please list the top five players of each position playing in college today. Outsides, Middles, Opposites, Setters, and Liberos. I am just curious.

Tigfan,
Who does Aaron Mansfield play for? What do you think of Adam Shrader from UCLA, his stats are decent this year. Are you choosing these guys strickly on digs per game and receiving errors? These are the only stats you can go by for Libero. Passing is the most important part and no stats to determine who is the best passer. How will the AVCA go about deciding the Libero this year?

Mansfield plays for Santa Barbara...
Schrader played better last year in my opinion...
Libero honors are difficult because they have limited stats and those stats can be misleading. A good blocking team might not get as many digs, and a good libero may try to take more balls, therefore giving him many more chances for recieving errors. It's a tough call.

Yeah, I think Shrader was incredible last year, but so far this year he hasn't looked that impressive. Strange.

I would like to add Paul Bocage, Stanford, as middle and Rich Nelson, UCLA, as setter.

I agree with you on Adam Shrader, his stats were decent but that doesn't make him a canidate for the Libero honors. And yes, it is difficult to determine the best Libero with stats. This positon is strickly based on observing how good they pass. I haven't watched all the Liberos you mentioned. I have seen Adam Shrader, Ricky Mattei and Ryan Stuntz. Out of those 3 I would put Ryan Stuntz and Ricky Mattei as excellent passers. No one hardly passes to these guys and when they do their passing is picture perfect. How are the other Liberos?

I would like to add Paul Bocage, Stanford, as middle and Rich Nelson, UCLA, as setter. Ok, but I cringe every time Bocage serves. At the UCLA fan, another Stanford fan behind me was shouting, "Please Paul, just get it in." Bocage proceeded to serve another right into the net. I wonder why he keeps jump-serving when his percentages of successful serves (at least in the two games I've seen him play--USC and UCLA) are so low.

I have to give kudos to John Mayer as setter. I don’t necessarily think he is “the best” (he is young and still has a ways to go before he can reach the elite status) although he is really good. But I have never seen a player with as much determination as he has. He will go after any ball, anywhere on the court. He amazes me every single time (and yes there have been several times) that he will easily jump over the tables and chairs on the sidelines just so he can get that ball over the net. This year I have been very impressed with his skills as a setter, but far more impressed with his skills as an all around player.
