Saw Dune Part 2 over the weekend. I enjoyed it a lot! Looked great, sounded great, Timmy can act. My wife and I saw every single Dune film/TV series ever made -- the 1984 David Lynch film and the two TV miniseries from 2000-03. Imagine my surprise when I saw Patrick Stewart playing a major role in the 1984 film. They were all horrible. However, the 2021 film was okay. But not great.

Now that Oppenheimer and Godzilla Minus One are available on streaming, I saw both films again the other evening with my wife back-to-back as a kind of combo feature. My wife, who is certainly not a fan of Godzilla, was bemused I picked Godzilla as a companion piece to Oppenheimer, since in her mind, Godzilla is nothing more than just a guy in a rubber suit stomping on miniature cities (true of course, but far from the whole story), but after watching both films again, she totally got how both films shared certain thematic elements and expression of the horrors of atomic bombs in their own way.
Godzilla Minus One...actually reminded me of a lot of Hollywood movies. You can see how director Takashi Yamazaki pay homage to blockbusters like Jaws and Dunkirk. Some of the characters in Godzilla Minus One reminded me of certain "character tropes" you find in Hollywood movies like "the brash and inexperienced kid", "the old and cynical guy" or the "smart guy with glasses", but its all done quite well and seamlessly integrate with the Japanese sensibilities in the film.
I also liked very much how the film criticize the "sacrifice your life" honor prevalent in Japan at the time, especially to throw away your life for a hopeless cause in WW2. Instead, the film repeatedly stress the importance of being alive as a meaningful thing to cherish. This theme is encapsulated in the story of the protagonist Kōichi Shikishima, at first condemned by his neighbors for cowardice in refusing to fulfill his suicide mission as a WW2 kamikaze pilot. Koichi suffers from guilt, humiliation, as well as PTSD. Even when he finds himself caring for a makeshift family after the war, he couldn't bring himself to admit he plays the defacto father figure to them. But in confronting Godzilla, he laters finds a sense of purpose again, not to throw away his life as a cannon fodder for a hopeless cause like in the war, but to live. So I like the transformation of Koichi throughout the story a lot.
Godzilla himself is all rage and anger, symbolizing the uncontrollable and untameable nature of nuclear power. What was remarkable was that the film makes you fear Godzilla again. He is not a loveable defender of the Earth in the film. He does not befriend any children. He stomps on fleeing civilians without mercy. Even more remarkably, the film makes you actually care about those puny humans being stomp on by the big G or simply unfortunate enough to be in his way, as he unleashes his devastating atomic breath, called "heat ray" in the film.
And my wife was surprised again to be in tears at the end of the movie. A Godzilla film as a tear-jerker? You learn something new everyday I guess, haha.

We saw ‘The Ministry Of Ungentlemanly Warfare‘. The story of Britain’s first special forces unit. It was done in a light hearted manner with farcical aspects. Interesting story.

Some movies I saw in the past couple of months:
April and the Extraordinary World -- Animation from France. Loved it. But I tend to love non-Pixar animation feature films.
Barbie -- I liked the first 1/3 but it quickly got tiring the rest of the way.
Beau is Afraid -- Amazingly weird film. It's like 3-4 different films in one -- all interesting. But from beginning to end, it's very strange. I loved it. If you like all sorts of random stuff (some of which are connected) happening, you'll love this film.
Blue Beetle -- Superhero movie with an all-Latino (I think?) cast. It's pretty standard superhero crap. It's often ridiculous like how every member of the protagonist's family has abilities (of the non-superhero kind) that helps them achieve objectives.
Bodie Bodies Bodies -- Teen horror flick with a series of unfortunate events that spell doom. I liked it but I didn't feel good about liking it.
Decision to Leave -- South Korean film by famed director Park Chan Wook (Oldboy, Lady Vengeance). Very stylish (and sometimes over-the-top stylish). Most of the stylized production works but when it doesn't, it really bombs. But I loved it except for the final 10% of it.
The Duke -- Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. The movie was way too light for the subject matter. At times, I didn't know what it wanted its tone to be.
Emily the Criminal -- Loved this drama. Stars Aubrey Plaza. That's all you need to know.
John Wick 4 -- I was kinda numb from all the action. There were some really good set pieces though like the fight on the streets with vehicles. That was pretty sweet. But overall, I hated the story and I hated all the mind-numbing shoot'em ups.
Living (2022) -- This movie was adapted from the Akira Kurosawa movie Ikiru. Stars Bill Nighy. I liked it.
Nanny (2023) - I liked it but didn't love it.
Till -- To me, most of the high praise for this movie stems from the fact the real life events from which this movie is based is historically important. I thought the movie was kinda boring.
The Woman King -- I couldn't get over the fact that Viola Davis played a superhero-like woman warrior. My wife picked the movie and I was like, "no, no, I just can't..."

The first "Smile" reminded me of a lot of the "Ring" and "It Follows".
