Watched three movies on the long flight before falling asleep: John Wick 3: AWESOME! Non-stop action from the get go with some humor blended in...like the Japanese assassins who felt privileged fighting John Wick. The best part is the potential for John Wick 4...we’ll, not really a potential because if they don’t do one then they’re a bunch of weenies. X-Men Dark Phoenix: ok, I don’t know the full story about the Dark Phoenix but I thought this wasn’t as bad as the reviews I have read. Better story than the original X-Men trilogy’s rendition of the Dark Phoenix. Pikachu Pokémon Detective: loved it! This may be a one and done but I sure hope not! John Wick 3: I have not seen this movie. X-Men Dark Phoenix: All X-Men movies suck, to a smaller or larger extent. Too bad Marvel needed the cash and had to sell their most valuable franchises (X-Men and Spiderman) before they started making their own movies. The Dark Phoenix storyline in the comics kind of sucked too. X-Men was never about the stories anyway; it was always about the characters interacting with each other. Detective Pikachu from Pokemon fanboys:

Any good classic WW2-themed movie to recommend? Lots of great movies, but two of my favorites hardly ever get any press: Enemy at the Gates (Jude Law, Rachel Weisz) -- Russian snipers in Russia Downfall (German film) -- about Hitler's last days. This is also the film where everyone in the entire world has taken certain scenes and inserted their own subtitles for the purposes of comedy.

Maybe my favorite movie with a WW2 setting is A Midnight Clear. Set during the Battle Of The Bulge.

In the early 70s, there were many movies influenced by the Vietnam War but not actually set in Vietnam because the subject was so touchy. One that has its moments is Kelly's Heroes. The same idea was revisited for the Iraq War with Three Kings.
Another interesting WW2-based film is Where Eagles Dare. It's not so much that the film itself is that great. However, the screenplay was written by Alistair MacLean, who also later wrote a novelization of his own screenplay. What seems interesting to me is that the movie is a bloodbath, with massive numbers of Germans being killed. In the book, absolutely no German is killed. The British and American commando team goes far out of their way in some cases to make sure that they don't kill any Germans, even by accident.

German sniper sent to hunt down the Soviet sniper, and the love trist with Jude Law (the Soviet sniper), Rachel Weiss (the chick) and Joseph Fiennes (the Commissar).

Dunkirk and Flags of Our Fathers (and Letter from Iwo Jima) are two recent ones.
Saving Private Ryan, The Great Escape, Bridge On the River Kwai, Das Boot, Schindler's List, Thin Red Line are obvious ones.

In Dunkirk, Mark Rylance played the civilian naval volunteer guy. He was also Thomas Cromwell in Wolf Hall.

The Unforgiven was excellent, although poor WW II history.

Wasn't Iwo Jima about the mother who recognized her son's butt? Or was that from an Iwo Jima documentary?

Another critically acclaimed WW2 film is Hacksaw Ridge (2016). My wife and I couldn't finish it. The lead actor is Andrew Garfield, who played Spider-Man in some of the many Spider-Man films. It had a hokey start about a young man who abhors violence because, as a kid, he almost killed his brother. Then, later, he's awed by the operation of a nearby hospital -- the equipment and the people running around trying to save people's lives and shiite -- and then he sets his gaze on the prettiest nurse (played by Teresa Palmer) you've ever seen in your life. Around this time, my wife said, "Umm, when is this guy going to get bitten by a radioactive spider?" A few minutes later, she said, "Oh gawd, do we have any other DVDs?" I don't know. The film had "stupid" written all over it from the start. Perhaps the rest of the film is a masterpiece. Maybe I should finish it.
