Big West Rankings: a so-so weekend for the Big West, other than Hawaii nobody is beating anybody of note - Northridge win over SDSU was solid boost, even if some teams piled up some wins and conference is 7 games over 0.500. After Hawaii & Northridge, the conference is looking very mediocre so far. It's nice for Poly & Fullerton to win, but somebody has got to beat somebody if the conference is going to entertain more than 2 teams getting into the NCAAs. The pecking order is clear so far, with #3-#8 largely indistinguishable. LB & UCSB might make or break their at-large chances by next week by playing two tournament teams from last year. W-L standings aren't going to mean much until conference. #1) Hawaii (conference desperately needed the win over UCLA, might as well just rank them #5 nationally until the end of the year. #2) Northridge ( so far so good but they should be 6-0, will know a lot more about North after playing Creighton & UCLA next week - biggest matches in history for Northridge to finally make a national statement after 2 years of heightened expectations - if they are ever gonna make a statement, the time is now) #3) Long Beach (struggling big time, some solid course and line-up corrections in the right direction despite loss vs. Miami, but Big West really needed the win) #4) UCI (blew a chance to keep undefeated and like LB Big West really needed a W vs. Cleveland but fell short) #5) UCSB (super tough schedule, so like LB a little hard to gauge) #6) Fullerton (wins are good, only one more tough test - USC - until conference #7) Cal Poly (nice to get wins, next week have an opportunity to get a break-thru win, if they can get Keddy back, they might make a move, sad so far she is not avail, better be ready by conference) #8) UC Davis (not looking good so far, gonna need to beat Oregon State to move up) #9) Riverside (let's be polite and not comment) Read more: volleytalk.net/thread/49898/official-2013-big-west-thread?page=7#page=6#ixzz2eJloJ9yC

Is Haleigh Hampton injured again? I read somewhere that Wallace had to replace her.

Is Haleigh Hampton injured again? I read somewhere that Wallace had to replace her. In the least surprising development of the year, just ahead of "the sun will set in the West," Hampton is indeed injured again. Knee injury this time.

Poor girl, She was injured all her club/high school career as well. Maybe she should just retire from the sport.

LB takes Charleston, 25-14, 25-19, 25-27, 25-21, got a little sloppy passing/setting last two sets. nice follow-up to the LMU sweep.
Next up Seattle, then UCLA nex Wednesday - the UCLA match will be interesting, both UCLA/LB looking like on the cusp NCAA tourny teams.

The Big West is starting to look pretty dismal this year. Hawaii will need to run the table and do it convincingly to have any hope of a seed.

The Big West is starting to look pretty dismal this year. Hawaii will need to run the table and do it convincingly to have any hope of a seed. well, it's not that bad, the bottom of the conference is still bad. But at least LB has a win over Illinois & Northridge has the win over San Diego State, so at least the top is better than last year. Hawaii has a chance at a decent seed. Long Beach vs. UCLA & Northridge vs. Washington will be huge matches for the conference. I think Hawaii could lose 2-3 more matches and still be seeded, and if they don't lose again, I bet they'd be a top 6 seed, depending on how LB & Northridge avoid bad losses.

Hampton is out 4-6 weeks. Losing Hampton is not really that horrible a thing as it might seem IMO. Hampton is not as quick as her replacement Miley, so while LB may lose some blocking up front it gains some quickness and IMO will get more consistancy and better timing up front. The bigger problem for Long Beach is going to be able to pass a lot more consistantly. Long Beach is very deep at MB.
