As we all predicted.....thanks for coming Mercyhurst. Looks like it was shooting practice. Always wondered why the "hurst" can't break out of the bottom. It is not a hard school to get into, has money and pretty good support from administration
ROMEOVILLE, Ill.-The Lewis men's volleyball team's quest for a return to the NCAA Men's Collegiate National Championship began with a quick disposal of Mercyhurst in the Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association quarterfinals.
The Flyers (25-5) swept the Lakers 30-16, 30-16, 30-15 in a match that lasted exactly one hour.
The victory allows Lewis to host the MIVA semifinals and final April 25-26. The Flyers will play their semifinal match at 7:30 p.m. April 25 against the winner of the Ohio State/Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne match. The other semifinal is scheduled for 5 p.m. April 25 and will pit the winners of the Loyola Chicago/Findlay and Ball State/Quincy matches against each other.
The MIVA Championship will be played at 7 p.m. in Neil Carey Arena. College Sports Television will televise the match. CSTV is a new station that launched April 7, 2003. Its goal is to broadcast and showcase all collegiate sports, not just the major revenue sports. CSTV can be found on DirectTV channel 610.
Lewis' serve dominated the match. The Flyers recorded six service aces in the second game alone and tallied eight for the match. In addition, the Lakers (9-20) were inconsistent in their passing even if they returned the serve. Game one saw five overpass kills and also led to five team blocks for the Flyers.
Lewis finished the match with vast advantages in every statistical category. The Flyers held margins of .570-.014 in hitting percentage, 54-21 in kills, 47-17 in assists, eight to three in aces, 23-10 in digs and 10-5 in blocks.
Jeff Soler paced the team with a match-high 15 kills while hitting .619. Soler added a run of three consecutive aces midway through the second game as well. Fabiano Barreto contributed 13 kills and Jose Martins passed out 43 assists.
Mercyhurst was led by Nate Keegan's five kills. Alex Laama posted three blocks.
