Hey All,
Well after a week, it looks like I have a chance to get the hardware instead of being the bridesmaid again! Here is a semi in-depth look at this weekends match-ups.
EIVA.
PSU vs. Princeton…PSU 3-0. Princeton is not a bad team at all, they just can’t play with PSU. For Princeton to have any prayer, they will have to get huge matches from their middles Alschuler and Hamming. Alschuler won a Nat’l Title when he played for Balboa Bay in HS, so there is definitely talent there. However, Penn State has too many weapons for Princeton to handle. This is a Sr. laden team for Penn State and they are not about to lose here.
George Mason vs. Rutgers…Mason 3-1. This should be a good match-up, but I see the more veteran Patriots taking the young Scarlet Raiders. Look for Sr.’s James Claney and Art Kulans to step it up for Mason in the match. The match-up of Opp’s should also be good between Iordanov-Rutger and Powell-Mason. I think Danko will get Powell in the match-up. But Mason’s overall depth gets Rutgers in 4.
Finals
PSU vs. Mason…PSU 3-1. Most people will see this as an easy 3-0 win for PSU, but they will have to earn their Final 4 bid here. In the end, I think that Penn States Sr. leadership of starters; Koljesar, Guerra, Slenker, Keil, and Mattei will be too much for Mason to handle. Mason will sneak a game out in game 1 or 2, but then PSU will roll to the Sr. classes 4th Final 4 appearance.

MIVA
Lewis vs IPFW…Lewis 3-0. I have seen a ton of recent message board love for IP, but they will be outclassed in this match-up. Ptak and Zbyszewski will get their kills, but they will likely hit for very low percentage numbers. On the Lewis end, Barretto always gets numbers and Meyer has been basically unstoppable since he arrived last year. Lewis has been the MIVA best team for 3 years now, but have yet to make a MIVA Finals appearance. They do this year.
Loyola vs. Ball State…Loyola 3-1. This match-up features the 2 of the best setters and players in the MIVA in Davis (LU) and Schunzel (BSU). Rambler middles Haas and Schroeder will do some damage to Cardinals Sasson or Grabovac (whoever plays), but Denmark will have the best match of the middles. Justin Schnor will be the difference for Loyola. He is the go to hitter that the Cardinals lack.
Finals
Lewis vs. Loyola…Loyola 3-2. This is the battle all of Illinois will be watching. These two teams have very little love for each other and it should be a very spirited match from the players and the fans. (Lewis is hosting the MIVA’s) I think that talent-wise, Lewis has the clear edge here. Look for Martins to run the entire kitchen sink at Loyola. Lewis will break out plays that Loyola hasn’t seen all year from them. Also, holding down both Baretto and Meyer is a tough task…but, Loyola isn’t afraid of Lewis at all. As Soph’s, (Davis, Schnor, Haas, and Kellum now Sr.’s) they pulled a huge upset in the MIVA Semi’s over Lewis and this year they beat them at home in 4 and went to Lewis and lost in 5. They both know each other extremely well. This will be the 3rd straight MIVA championship appearance for the Ramblers and it looks like their time. In the end, Davis will not let the Ramblers lose and they pull out a dramatic game 5 win at Lewis.

MSPF
Pepp vs. UCI…Pepp 3-0. I think Pepp lucked out a bit in getting Irvine instead of Stanford. Stanford was really looking good down the stretch with a healthy Topple and a team that got better without him. I was very shocked that Irvine got them. Irvine has been pretty bad since they started off with that blazing beginning. Look for a focused Pepp squad at home prepping for another showdown with…<br> Hawaii vs. BYU…Hawaii 3-0. This is basically a Final 4 showdown match with the winner getting in and the loser going home. I have said it all year and I am not changing my opinion now…Hawaii and Pepp are in a class by themselves this year. UH has been very tough lately and have that look of a team that isn’t about to give up it’s title without a huge fight. They have the best player in the game in Theocharidis. Ching and Thomas have been solid all year. BYU’s Peterson has done a fantastic job this year with this group. They don’t have near the talent they have had in recent years, yet they have been the #3 team all year. UH will be very focused, knowing they lose and they don’t defend their title.
Finals
Pepp vs. UH…Pepp 3-0. This will have an almost anticlimactic feeling, as both teams know they will likely have to play again in 1 week…. for all the marbles. While I am not suggesting that either team will tank or anything like that, I just think there will be less emotion than usual for the match. I think Pepp being at home and this likely having a business feel to it gives them the edge. I also think the UH staff will spend 100% of this week preparing for BYU and will not spend any time thinking about Pepp in the Finals. That’s why I see Pepp in 3 instead of 4 or 5.
Well then again I could be all wrong and UH comes out fired up in the Finals thinking they still need a win to guarantee a Title shot!
Good Luck to all as always!!!!

Hey roofan... Thanks for your EIVA & MIVA insights. It really helps us to appreciate what talent there is...AND in our predictions. I'm especially looking forward to the Ball State vs. Loyola-Chicago match...to be contrary to you, I chose Ball State. We'll see who goes down in flames, Squirrel Boy Keep those comments and player views coming.

I'm with Roofan on Loyola-Chicago over Ball State. When they are playing their best, Loyola can be very good, & they really want another crack at Lewis. I agree that Schnor & Davis will be the diference. But, in the MIVA final I think Lewis has too many weapons for Loyola.
Roofan, I also agree that Princeton's Dennis Alschuler can play. I hope he gets some recognition on the all-EIVA teams (probably 2nd team).
I look for the George Mason-Rutgers/Newark match to go 5 games. I think Mason will win but believe Rutgers has improved late in the season. If they get past Rutgers, Mason will have a shot against Penn State if they can outblock the Nittany Lions & if opposite Shaun Powell can have a strong match. Powell has some talent but he can be painfully inconsistent.
