Out of the eight Badger seniors-to-be, which ones have scholarships? I'm thinking at least six in total. That needs to get balanced over the long-haul, but they were very, very competitive in the Championship game, so they can't just redshirt a healthy EC, CT, DM, etc. and does Graff basically sit for the second straight year? What do you do? The Badgers have one coming in 2014 and four commitments for 2015 (S, MB, OH, OH). Assuming the 2015 class stays at four, they've got some flexibility if injuries hit for redshirts. Thompson and Mikaelsen being in this senior class wasn't an expectation a couple of years ago and as nice as it will be to have both back, it complicates things. I'm pretty sure the Wisconsin coaching staff is aware of this and has thought it through. 2014 senior class schollies (to my knowledge): Chapman, Graff, Mikaelsen, Morales, Thomas, Thompson. Kvas & Workman are walk-ons, I believe. Graff is eligible for a medical redshirt but undecided on whether she wants to hang around that long. She enrolled early, so she's been there a while. Also, IIRC she is premed, so she would want to spend some time focusing on academics to make sure she can have a strong application. I hope she stays and plays because that will benefit the team greatly, but I understand if she decides that's not what's best for her. Sheff commented on the scholarship imbalance around NLI signing day and stated that it's a concern, and he will be keeping an eye out for a transfer or an opportunity to move some scholarships around. At that point in November he had much bigger things on his mind. Is there too many people on scholarship or what?

She was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar this year. And volleyball strengthens that application more than you think.

The players not on scholarship are Claire Raddatz, Victoria Ito, Caroline Workman and Kt Kvas. Then there is 12 remaining on the team. So I assume Hickey and Morey were both on scholarship if the program is fully funded.

Kinesiology is her major. She has no issues with her academics. She was a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar this year. And volleyball strengthens that application more than you think. Surprise! Rainbow knows more than you on this one. K'ology as prep for medical schools. You can major in any science or science-related area and be premed as long as you take the prerequisites. Bailey Reschel's major was psych (rehabilitation psych, maybe?), and she was premed. And I know Crystal is a very smart lady and a good student. She's had several 4.0 semesters, and of course a med school will be more impressed by a high GPA achieved while playing a varsity sport. When I said "focus on academics," I didn't mean "get her grades up," though I realize it could've been interpreted as such - my bad. I was thinking that there might be required premed classes that are only offered in the fall that aren't compatible with being on a traveling sports team. The article I read quoted her saying that she wasn't sure she wanted to do 2 more years of volleyball. That was her thought at the beginning of the season. Her thinking might have changed given the team's success. I was speculating on the academics/premed piece as possibly being an additional contributing factor in her decision making.

So this is the best guess of the scholarship situation:
2015: 6 available; 4 commitments (Chapman, Graff, Mikaelsen, Morales, Thomas, Thompson)
2016: 1 available (Morey)
2017: 3 available (Blake, Carlini, Nelson)
2018: 2 available (Bates, Fricano)

If Graff's injury is serious, wouldn't she be able to medically retire and thus free up her scholarship? Didn't Charlotte Brown and Hayley Thramer do the same?

With the return of everyone on that roster except their fantastic libero Hickey, this team with a brand new attitude is on the prowl in 2014. 8 seniors with Morales, Thompson, Thomas, and Chapman all huge weapons this year not to mention the addition of outside Graff, rightside Mikaelson, and the DS duo of Kvas, and Workman. The deepest senior class next year in my opinion! Next year will be the year to do it! Penn State loses their 3 biggest hitters (slay, scott, mcclendon) and players like Maddie Martin who made that team that much deeper. Yes they do return their setter, middle2 , outside2 and libero they will be probably be relying on freshman for most of their offense as megan courtney is very off and on. Nebraska lost their all american outside Robinson who clearly lead the team this year and will be looking for a leader. I am hoping for them to run through pre season, Big ten play (2-3 loses at the most) and the tournament as that senior class will be wanting that championship more than anything in the world. This year Wisconsin was 13 and 9 against big ten competition. They lose their libero and will probably replace her with the player that most teams served as much as possible. They also return some players from injury who can contribute positively. Wisconsin has a chance to do much better. They have a chance to win the conference. They also have a chance to be a second tier team in 2014 that had a good run in the tourney in 2013. I don't have a confident prediction for 2014. I was skeptical about Michigan heading into 2013. I think Wisconsin has a better chance for a good 2014 season than Michigan had this year, but it's no sure thing.

If it were that serious, then yes, she would. It does not seem to be that serious. She's walking on it. She'll continue rehabbing this spring. To my understanding, the question is not whether she returns at all, but whether she applies for and receives a medical hardship and returns as a redshirt junior, or whether she doesn't take/receive one and returns as a senior.

Again all the teams especially PSU and Nebraska are going down a notch in experience while Wisconsin is only going up especially with 8 seniors and a national runner up experience. Taylor Morey will get the libero spot but she will improve greatly. Excited to see Deme another season.

Love Wisconsin and I think they will do really well next year but how often has the runner up gone to win the title the next year? Or even make the title game. I feel like not often?

Hickey is such a strong passer, great digger, and competitor, Wisconsin will really miss her. Graff was all-everything but I wouldn't be sure she can hit much higher than Morales as that was never her great strength anyway. No doubt Wisconsin will be in the mix, as will Illinois, Purdue, and Michigan State. PSU will need FPOY candidates, Nebraska will need the twins to really step up. Minnesota, Ohio State, who knows. Northwestern, Indiana, Iowa, Rutgers, Maryland, fill out the schedule and should all be wins.

Penn State lost in 97 and 98 then won in 99, Nebraska lost in 05 and won in 06. Stanford lost 3 consecutive years (06-08). And most recently: Cal loses in 2010 then lost in 1st round 2011 Illinois loses in 2011 then don't make 2012 tournament Oregon loses in 2012 then lost in 2nd round 2013

And Oregon lost bad last year but Wisconsin proved they deserved to be there.
