Casey Jennings!! ryan-doherty.com/"....Who gets stuck with me this year? The answer is Mr. Casey Jennings. Some of you more avid readers of the greatest of all beach volleyball blogs may remember a post in which I said I would have nothing to do with Casey ever again. (He said something that rhymes with “Truck glue” to me in the middle of a match) After our subsequent argument in the player’s tent at the AVP Salt Lake City, I started getting a better picture about who Casey is and why he acts the way he does. We approach athletics and competition very differently, as C.J. views his opponent as someone who is trying to keep him from his goal. But that doesn’t mean that either of us is wrong or that he is acting out of malice or disrespect. We had a chance to talk a bunch this off-season and clear the air. (Plus, he is ridiculously good. That always helps) I am looking forward to starting up practice with him next week and getting ready for a good 2014."

So did Rogers hang up his boardshorts? I was gonna ask the same of Jake Gibb, but I remembered I was confusing my Caseys. How dare two people have the same first name.

Very interesting...I think it will work...Ryan now has him M.V.B. from the school of Todd Rogers, so Casey can teach him how to take Manhattan. Right out of US History!

How about you explain your "meh"? I like it. Casey is a true champion and has more victories that most people playing at this point. Yes, he's getting up there but the Kid can still bring it and his desire and passion for the game is unquestionable - he loves the game and has always worked his butt off for everything he has achieved. He still has plenty of fire left and at least a couple good years left in the tank...

I certainly like it more than Ryan and Todd, which had flared out near the end. It is neither of their faults either. Todd went from the best player in the world to someone who still needs work, while getting older himself. Ryan went from dominating the US tour with someone who was a perfect compliment, to playing the best players in the world with someone not as well fit for him (in nice terms).
I'll be honest, I was still hoping for Lucena to decide he would make Ryan into the next big thing. Other than Casey Patterson, I feel Nick would be the best fit for big Ryan.
I'm too lazy to go scrounging through FIVB points, but where would Ryan and Jennings fit in right away FIVB point wise? That could play a bit of a role in their international success and how quickly they can find some.

Third unless we were to see a Lucena/Rogers combo Dalhausser/Rosenthal 3590 Gibb/Patterson 3040 Doherty/Jennings 1954 Others: Rogers 1040 Lucena 940 Keenan 770 Hyden 726 Montgomery 697 Slick 652 Drost 647 Brunner 563 Mayer 548 Bourne 487 Olson 318 McColloch 168 McKienzie 140 Rester 140 DeFalco 112 Yoder 112 A lot under 100 As you can see the 4th team is going to depend a lot on who teams with whom and whether or not Rogers decides to play a tournament. Of the teams that paired last year on AVP or FIVB consistently, it would look like: Lucena/Brunner 1503 Montgomery/Drost 1344 Keenan/Mayer 1318 Hyden/Bourne 1213 (although I wouldn't think Hyden plans to play FIVB) So Lucena/Brunner would appear to have the inside track, but Rogers could mess them up with a couple different partners. Early NORCECAs could play a big part in deciding the 4th team, too. This all, of course, is based on FIVB keeping the same entry point/CQ calculations and rules.

Karch Mike Dodd Whitty Are there others? Todd may have done it a couple years ago. Casey is not just super old, he is playing with the 4th or 5th best big man. Fuerbringer, even coming out of retirement was 2nd or 3rd (probably 3rd) and much better than Ryan. There wont be any magical, euphoric, adrenaline filled runs with Ryan. Its hard to see them winning anything full field.

Its hard to see them winning anything full field. You are forgetting Casey himself. He was 38 last year winning MB. He also won an NORCECA with Stafford Slick, and got a 2nd with Phil in Brazil (losing in 3 to Pedro & Bruno). He looks like he is in outstanding shape, while he may not win an event, I can see them making a finals. I think Ryan will feed off of Casey's passion.

I could see a final too. I think John Hyden has also won post-38.
Thinking of that though I have all these bigs rated above Ryan:
Phil Jake Theo Tri (I think for most of last year he wasn't but towards the end he looked great at times)
and I think Keenan is almost as good

I think the only thing worth noting in comparing Keenan to Doherty is Doherty doesn't have his "10,000 hours" in yet, so there is the possibility of improvement. Not a lock he will get substantially better, but the possibility is there. I think with Keenan, you know what you're getting at this point and it isn't going to change.
My question on Bourne from a FIVB/Olympic standpoint - is he really a "big?" He's 6' 5". That is REALLY small these days for a blocker on the FIVB.
EDIT: I retract my comment on Bourne. After double checking myself, there are plenty of top level blockers around Bourne's size: Pedro, Samoilovs, Prudel, Herrera and a couple others are all his height or shorter.

My "meh" vote meant that the Doherty/Jennings partnership just doesn't excite me at all. 7th place finishes will abound, IMO.

Update: Doherty's playing with Lucena next year...according to his post on Monday. Wonder where this leaves Theo?
