I was following this tournament on South Carolina's twitter @gamecocksandvb and it looks like it was a pretty cool tournament. The pics of the venue looked pretty awesome and I read a tweet that at their first match they had 1,100 people there. Just curious, how many spectators usually watch a sand vb dual? www.gamecocksonline.com/allaccess/?media=441724spursandfeathers.com/sports/sandvball/2013-14/releases/svhomeopeningweekendphotosIt's great to see an athletic department that has this kind of support for collegiate sand. I'm excited to see how collegiate sand volleyball evolves over the next few years. Also, how interesting that Oregon flew across the country to play when there are so many more programs on the west coast.

Oregon is going to So Cal next weekend and are playing PAC-NW schools after that - so a trip East gets the whole country covered. They probably thought the best chance to pick up a win was to not play just the Cali schools (Ducks lost pretty badly here, but at least took a match here and there--I think we'll see a lot of single-digit scores against USC [West] next weekend). Oregon was late to the game in setting up a sand program for this year (it really came from the SWA this fall and not the VB program), they don't real "sand" players, and a few preseason sand practices got rained out--that lost time is kind of a big deal with everyone being pretty new to the sport. I expect Oregon will have a somewhat competitive program in a couple of years (thanks to Uncle Phil, hiring the head sand coach from LBSU, and an AD that wants to be competitive in everything) but this year is just the indoor players working on rounding out their games.

Uncle Phil will have to build them some sand courts as they are practicing at a local park. Thier current coach was quoted in the local paper as saying that www.registerguard.com/rg/sports/31318768-81/sand-oregon-matches-metro-volleyball.html.csp"... there aren't any plans for building a sand facility for the team, but she said they’re hoping for one in the next few years so people can catch a match." I'm hoping that trip to USC (east) will speed things up. I agree with the earlier post, there were some great pics of good sized crowds and the Gamecocks built some nice courts for their team. Maybe they can get a local bar to build some for them, LSU is playing a few matches at a place called "Mango's".

That's pretty impressive. Stanford had perhaps a few hundred spectators for their first match last year. I don't know what the SoCal schools draw.

I watched some of SoCal's matches online, the courts look great but there really doesn't appear to be much atmosphere compared to South Carolina's. I think the best I've seen through social media is UHs setup at Queen's Beach.

They might be adding up the separate days because that doesn't really look like 1100 to me. Still a solid turnout whatever the case.
USC(west)'s stadium is really nice but having one side open to traffic is always going to bring down the mood. I think courts on an actual beach will always have better atmosphere.

If Oregon was to build sand courts near the Athletic Complex of Autzen, it would look amazing with the scenic background of mountains and trees.
