COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (March 20, 2014) – The USA Volleyball beach teams of Lane Carico and Brittany Hochevar and also Tri Bourne and John Hyden won their respective NORCECA qualification tournaments on Thursday at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica, Calif.
The victories mean that these U.S. teams will have the first pick of competing in the NORECA Beach Circuit events in Cayman Islands, Guatemala City, Guatemala and Antigua, Guatemala.
In the women’s final, second-seeded Carico (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) and Hochevar (Fowler, Colo.) defeated top-seeded Jennifer Fopma (Costa Mesa, Calif.) and Whitney Pavlik (Laguna Beach, Calif.), 21-17, 21-16.
In the third-place match, fourth-seeded Kim DiCello (San Diego, Calif.) and Tealle Hunkus (Girard, Ohio) beat third-seeded Christal Engle (Pallyup, Wash.) and Heather Hughes (Fallbrook, Calif.), 19-21, 21-18, 15-11.
On the men’s side, second-seeded Bourne (Aiea, Hawaii) and Hyden (Pensacola, Fla.) defeated fifth-seeded Will Montgomery (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.) in the final, 21-8, 23-21.
In the third-place match, top-seeded Todd Rogers (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and Theo Brunner (Ridgefield, Conn.) beat sixth-seeded Kevin McColloch (Solano Beach, Calif.) and Derek Olson (Eugene, Ore.), 18-21, 21-19, 15-12.
Teams will most likely wait to accept bids to the NORCECA Beach Circuit until after next Wednesday’s FIVB Country Quota Playoff, which will also be held at the Annenberg Beach House in Santa Monica. That tournament will determine a playing slot at the FIVB Grand Slam tournament in Shanghai, China.
