Irvine leads most of the first game. Then they get two blown calls at 27-28 (or something like that) and win 30-28.

Stanford 20-18 in game 2. They would be ok if they could pass.

Stanford wins 2nd game. Continues to pass like a high school team.

UCI is staying close because of their passing and serving. Once the passing breaks down, or if Stanford can pass as well, it will be difficult for them.

Irvine 6-3. Serving tough, Stanford passing like a high school team again.

11-9 Stanford, then its 11-13 UCI, then Stanford wins 15-13 --- 3 straight serves by sakaida (floaties)to win it. Only on video, but I can't imagine the emotional rollercoaster of the players at the game.

UCI has fantastic serving, ball control, and better in-system plays. Very few errors except in set 3. I feel they could beat anyone with tonight's performance.
Stanford was inconsistent with serve receiving most of the night. But in the end their pin hitters carry the team to the win (with help from the UCI passing lapses).

Stanford has been very strong with their passing, so Irvine must have done a good job serving. I see Irvine had a lot of serving errors (something like 21) so they clearly concentrated on getting Stanford out of system. A little ironic that Sakaida and his floats helped Stanford over the top, but the same thing happened at Pepperdine a month or two ago, so not unprecedented.
Be interested to see how Stanford does. Two 15-13 wins in two weeks is not exactly a resounding pronouncement of Stanford superiority, but Irvine has beaten some good teams lately.

Bad, obviously, but shanks, just not getting it up to the net, what was going on? I know Irvine is an aggressive serving team, but did Stanford have trouble with the floaters, or just the pins big topspin serves? We're gonna have to pass better than it seems like we passed against UCI to beat Pepperdine, unless we can really break down Taylor. I know we swept Pepperdine 3-0/3-1, but I don't think they'll be going down easy. Any insight would be much appreciated.

Since the match is at byu, confined court, and with the altitude, you will see a lot more float serves than jump serves. So the game will focus more on blocking as serves will not be as tough. Unless a team breaks down completely passing, blocking will be the key to victory. Tough match to call since both teams are playing really well and it'll be in neutral court.

As I recall with the lousy stream, Irvine pounded Stanford's right side with hard jumpers and spin serves, pretty much what they did in the match in Irvine a week or so ago. The teams were about equal on aces, but Irvine produced a lot more poor passes, usually forcing Shaw to his extreme right or at least 10 feet off the net. In spite of these problems, Shaw managed to connect with the middles impressively, and the LOH's bailed out the team by terminating on long looping sets from the cheap seats. Irvine's libero was outstanding, but the rest of the defense was meh, and Irvine's blocking was only effective when Stanford was horribly out of system. My problem with Stanford is that Irvine isn't very good and yet easily could have won both the teams' last matchups. Two bright spots: Mochalski was solid with more attacks than Irvin (maybe because Shaw was setting so much from the right), and Haley who was something like 6 for 7 on the evening with 3 blocks.

Lots of good points, but I can't agree that "UCI isn't very good".
There not UCI of previous years, but they had a very good run end of year. Saw the game where they pretty much pounded Beach at UCI near the end. And the way they finished game 5 will haunt them vs. a good Stanford team. I thought they had the wrong setter playing - but there is probably a reason, and that's why they have a coach.
I think Stanford will take Pepp.
