Bah. UCI could've won this. Too many dumb mistakes(throwing away amazing plays made by another player, late game missed serves). Too little production from the outside (no outside hitter hit positive), and poor defense(lots of easy off speed shots hit the floor that should've been up). Fixing any one of those things might've given them the game. Fixing them all would have definetely meant a win.
Pelzel played well, but there was just too much on his shoulders. He had over half his teams kills, that shouldn't be happening. You don't win games with unbalanced stats like that. I was very impressed with Nic Vislay. A 6'4" middle blocker, he looked a bit outsized by the gigantic Pepperdine team, but he more than held his own against them and got some HUGE blocks and was able to get the ball past the Pepperdine block without much trouble.
It was a good match with a lot of great and entertaining play, but it was also painful because there were also a lot of ugly plays. It was a good shot, and its still farther and better in the playoffs than any UCI team has ever done before.

What game were you watching? Vislay had 5 kills and three blocks.

Hey Eater... I'm all for team loyalty, but your assessment of the match was really off. Did you see the same match as the rest of us? Pepperdine dominated tonight. Jimmy Pelzel was pretty impressive finding the open lanes, but other than that...UCI didn't fair well, in fact they played a little too conservative (except Pelzel). I've seen them play better, but it's Pep's year...deal with it, and give them credit for being an excellent team. Hope to see UCI again next year. They should be better...but then again, Long Beach will be up there as well. You were pretty vocal when winning earlier this year...please be the same in defeat. It was a good volleyball match either way.

Well that's crap right there, because Nic got two back to back and another not more than 10 plays after that, and I know those weren't the only blocks he got. Keenan and Rooney only got 2 and 1 more, respectively, and they've got 6 inches on the guy. Only 5 kills, but he hit .500, against a much taller block. Keenan had 6, and hit .333

It was a good volleyball match either way. Yeah they dominated and played well, but there's no reason UCI couldn't have beat them. I never said Pep didn't play well, and my assessment of the uci hitters was much the same as yours. No one but Pelzel produced much offensively, but that was there own doing as much as Pep's and they could've changed that. Don't know what the problem was, they looked flat. Maybe nervous, gave up before the game started, don't know. Two hitters hit negative, as much through wild shots into the net and 10 feet out of bounds as into the block, if they had just not screwed up-not even played great, just hadn't screwed up, that would've made a difference of at least a couple points, which would've been a win in the first and third games. There were at least 2 or 3 just plain dumb plays each game that didn't need to happen, take those out and again, you probably have a win. I don't hold out much hope for irvine next year unless they get a lot of new recruits. They're still weak in the middle, their losing they're setter, they lose 2 on the outside, which leaves them with one hitter who's not particularly dependable, and Jimmy. If I thought the hitting was unbalanced this year... They're going to have to have freshmen in 2 starting spots(setter and outside), and really need a good middle blocker to work in there, and really should have another OH rotating in the outside. That means at least 4 good recruits who can compete their freshmen year will be necessary for a successful season. Hopefully Speraw can do something Irvine coaches have never been able to do and bring in a big recruiting class.

Hey there VBCrusin, just wanted to congratulate your team and to let you know I'll be rooting for Pepperdine to win the Nationals. I always liked Brad Keenan and hope he goes out with a bang (winning the Nationals)!

Thanks V...for your cheers for Pep in the Finals.
Win or lose, we have some GREAT teams in the MPSF, and I enjoy watching them all. Even if Pep or BYU didn't make it to the Finals...I'd be there to watch some fantastic volleyball. ;D
Incidentally, if anyone traces my early posts of several months ago, I DID say that Pep & BYU would go the the Finals when everyone said it would be Hawaii & Pep. Heyyyyyyyyyyy I'm back. ;D

I wished K5 would still show the MPSF championship match, for I am sure there's going to be some great volleyball between BYU and Pepperdine. Dang.
