Neither DeNiro nor Michael whatshisface were believable as baseball players. This is America, however, and you are entitled to your misguided opinions--as long as you don't repeat that mistake you made with lederhosen. Moriarty. Michael Moriarty. Guthrie alumnus. Your neck of the woods. Susan Sarandon's fellas (those two leading actor types that both appear to speak in monotone voices in the majority of their movies) in the movie were believable as baseball players? Both movies were entertaining, I preferred BTDS over BD. I've never made a mistake with lederhosen. I find lederhosen to be a perfectly natural and normal accessory to kevlar boxers.

Why don't we stick to the topic or to volleyball at least? You can exchange your useless banter in other ways in other places. ;D Did you bother to read the original post? The thread is titled as being off topic (not the nice OT) and it mentioned both Pete Rose as well as movies. Where has anyone gone off topic from those topics? Not that some of us worry about whether we're on or off topic most of the time.

You aren't saying that Costner and Robbins don't SOUND like ballplayers are you? Because that's a different argument. Again, your are entitled to your opinion by the power invested in me.

Yes, Ray Liotta was in "Goodfellas," one of my favorite movies of all time. Loved the part where he rails on his babysitter. He was also in "Corrina, Corrina," one of the most underrated movies and unseen movies of all time. Great flick. He was also the FBI guy in "Hannibal" who got a lobotomy and had portions of his brains cooked by Mr. Hannibal Lecter himself. Ray was also in "Narc," another great flick. In short, he's a pretty good actor. Help me out again. Was Whoopi Goldberg also in "Corinna, Corinna"?

I'm hurt you did not read my post.
Yes. She was the "maid". The romantic lead.

I just didn't think they were appreciably believable as baseball players in BD. The movie was good, just not because those two acted so well they made me think of them as real baseball players. I did like Costner in his other baseball movies though. Field of Dreams and Dances With Wolves. Ooops, make the second one For The Love Of The Game.

It has to do with the integrity of the game. Gambling threatens that. The things you mention don't. Thus, from a baseball standpoint, THEY need to control gambling, because society doesn't. So they have. Really? How many players have gotten a lifetime ban for using illegal steroids (or corked bats?) Both of those threaten the integrity of the game as well.

Could we all get back on topic by talking about Ray Liotta? How did we get off track on Pete Rose? Geez, you people need focus.

Okay, how about this:
Let Pete Rose in the HOF IF they let Shoeless Joe Jackson (not the singer) in also and all other worthy candidates who ever bet on baseball. Don't let Pete Rose in UNTIL Shoeless Joe gets in.
Also, let D.B. Sweeney in as well. And Ray Liotta. They look like great baseball players.

My Not So Humble Opinion:
The Hall of Fame is for professional baseball players' abilities while they played in the league. It is not a hall of fame for the most moral, the best role models, or the best humans. I am one who takes professional sports for what they are, entertainment for the masses. My parents never led me to believe pro athletes were to be my role models, and when I become a parent I will not expect a pro athlete to be my child's role model. I don't look to athletes for guidance in my every day life, I look to them for entertainment. While I agree its shameful and unfortunate that countless pro athletes are convicted of crimes every year all year long, that has no bearing on their abilities to play their sport.
Yeah its bad that Pete Rose bet on games, but that has nothing to do with him being one of the greatest players of all time. Forget about his life off the diamond, and recognize his playing acheivements as they should be.

I'm trying to think of a good role for Pete. And I think he'd make a great Rhett Butler in a remake of Gone With the Wind. Whoopi could be Scarlet.
Or how about taking over for Arnold in Terminator 4?

How about Arnold playing Pete in "The Pete Rose Story" movie?
Imagine Arnold (as Pete) running from 3rd base to home plate directly at Ray in full battle gear with machine guns blazing.
Ray tossing a mini-nuke in the form of a baseball at Arnold.

They do not lead to questions about whether players are trying to win. That's what intregity of the game is about. So cheating to win is okay, just not cheating to lose (if Rose actually did that.) That is an odd definition of intregity.

I was kind of thinking of "director of recruiting" for Mick Haley....we could send him to Puerto Rico, Mexico, etc. and let him look for true amateur VB players ;D
