My daughter played for a different club last year, but I think she'll try out at CJV this year as well. I've heard that CJV rates height really heavily. My daughter's a setter, but could also play libero. She's a shorty - maybe 5 foot at 12 y/o.
Hopefully, wherever she plays, she'll continue learning and having fun. She plays year-round (school, travel, beach). She loves it. We always tell her she can step back, I don't want to be "that" parent pushing her until it's not fun. But for now, this week actually, she has a 4-hour camp everyday then comes home and hits the ball against the house for hours.
She had a bid to play in the Junior Olympics, but we just couldn't afford it this year, so she is a decent player. I love CJV's network, it looks like they have a good system in helping girls get scholarships. All mine talks about is playing in college, then pro-beach, then coaching.
Just hearing a lot of discouragement about trying CJV just because she's not tall.

It never hurts to try out. Setters don't have to be super tall. I know my daughter grew 4" from May of 6th grade to November of 7th grade (so in like 6 months), so height quickly changes at this age. My daughter's team ran a 6-2 because they had two 5' setters and it worked just fine. I don't know about CJV, but most clubs I've seen select talent and then if it's close or even in ability go with height. If she's got the skills and the passion, she'll find her place.
My advice would be to find her the best training and environment, regardless of club or height. One bad year can kill a young player's passion.

She ran a 5-1 and used both setters about equally. Unless one was really, really messing up, she didn't pull them out, but alternated them every set. They were about equal in skill. She used whoever was more "on" if it went to a third. I think her school coach is planning a 5-1 as well, but she's done 6-2. She is planning to try out at the club she was at last year, too, because if her old coach moves up with her, we'll probably stay there. But like anywhere else, there are a few coaches that I wouldn't let her play for. I guess the difference is that at the club she played for, I know which ones those are!
