I found out this weekend that Marci plans to enroll this spring at Florida and forgo the rest of her High School Year. Will she be allowed to participate in spring training? I also heard another player is doing the same . Will this be a future trend? Has this happened before?
Sorry If its been talked about already.
Yeah!! I'm a sophomore now!

Cal had a quarterback graduate one semester early from HS, enrolled for Spring semester, and practiced with the FB team. I hear a good deal of JC transfers do this too. I'm curious as to how the scholarship is applied though. Does it count towards the scholarship limits for the previous playing season or next. Or does the athlete have to pay her own way?

It's not as common in volleyball and other smaller sports, but it's fairly common in football. Assuming her course work is complete(last I heard, it was), Marcie will be starting at UF next week and will be around for spring training and what not. It has no effect on her eligibility. It will give her a nice jump start on her college career and by the time the fall rolls around, she'll be ready to go. It's really a great thing for her and for the Gators. I expect her to make an immediate impact for the Gators and see a lot of playing time, more than likely as an outside hitter.

J. Simpson will be doing the same at UW-Madison.

That is really key for the badgers (about J Simpson starting early). After losing Shields, they really have a hole in the setter spot. I don't think that the coaches are that confident in Katie Lancing, and getting Jacyln a semester of work under her belt will be a huge plus for her going into the season next year. It always helps to have a 6-1 setter.

Now, how I wish that Gysin and Copenhagen would start at USC early too. But early spring enrollment is not for everyone, and perhaps it is better for the girls to go through the normal course of high school stuffs, graduating together with their schoolmates.

Even if Gysin and Copenhagen started a semester early, there is no guarantee that they will start next year, maybe Gysin but Copenhagen has no chance starting with Adams and Candelas returning

I saw her on campus yesterday. Mary also mentioned on her show that Marcie had started up at UF and that it's very likely you'll see her with Collymore on the outside starting in 2004.

I think it is unusual for Mary to announce that Marcie or anyone, will definately be starting even before she practices. Mary has always been respectful for other players like Chapman who should be told that she has a chance also. That's providing Michelle is not needed in the middle again this year. I think Florida will surprise a lot of people this year!!

Mary didn't hand her the job or say it was definite, she just said that getting her on campus early and with her talent level, she told Gator fans to not be surprised if you see a freshman starting on the outside, alongside Jane. If you look at Florida over the years, very rarely have freshmen ever started, at any position. Testament to the great talent ahead of them, but also, most freshmen, although good, take a while to adjust to the next level. Marcie isnt' most freshmen and coming in early will certainly help her come August.
As for Chatman, look for her to still be the Gators most versatile player and I think she may just stay in the middle. She got better as the year went along and although undersized, she can be very good in the middle. Gators other middles, aside from Sherri, will still not have as much experience as Michelle.

Does anyone who has seen Killingsworth think she'll challenge for M2? And yeah, it seems Florida doesn't start a ton of freshmen (but weren't Cruz, Jenkins, and Robinson exceptions). But it seems these players really come around by their sophmore/junior year (Collymore, Moscovic, Manz, Sanchez). I think sitting on the bench (and occassionally subbing in) can be a good thing. Players can learn a lot that way. Too many posters here think that if you're benched as an underclassman, you should automatically transfer.

There is a lot to be said for collegiate playing experience. Mary is a proven winner. She is a tremendous recruiter and trainer. She treats her athletes with a ton of respect. I have not met anyone who has regretted playing in her program. Well, if Florida does well it wouldn't be a surprise given their returning and incoming talent. Well, if Florida does well it wouldn't be a surprise given their returning and incoming talent. Agreed. I am not too sure many people would be surprised to see Florida in the Final Four again. They return a lot of talent. Collymore, Williams, Moscovic are all returning starters and McCray and Chatman were also starters for part of the year. They are well prepared for next year. They lose Cruz as their go to and Mandes in the back. Passing might be a little suspect, but over all, they should be one of the top contenders next year.
