i think Summer has the talent to consistently finish 5th-9th as opposed to 9th to 17th (her current average more or less). She may have the talent but does she have the work and the want? When I watch her play she plays like a very lazy big hitting guy. She reminds me of a guy like Brad Keenan. She doesn't work hard in the sand to win hustle points, she plays in little bubble that she won't go out of, she has no emotion on the court and when the game changes and she doesn't it just spirals out of control. I just don't think she's that great of a player right now. It's hard to watch her get continuously outworked on the court over and over. I cannot stand to cheer for her.

Interested in what folks think about Dowdy. Was out of town for MBO, but from what little I've seen of her it seems like she might have serious upside (clearly Nicole thought highly of her since she picked her as a partner). There are very few blockers on the women's side who change the game substantially and it seems like she might be one of them.

I just went on to the stats for MBO, while I think the stats kept aren't always accurate, I did notice a couple things. -Dowdy has blocked well the 2 tournaments she's played w/ Nicole. -Lane Carico seemed to do well playing behind a blocker instead of Split blocking, & Kim DiCello blocked well at MBO. Go down the list of Hitting %, some telling facts there. Also, Frendrick had a crazy MBO: Lauren had 10 more blocks than the next person and was T3 in Aces! That's a ton of points earned.

Summer Ross often just doesn't LOOK like she's playing as hard as she probably is. I saw her in '13 FIVB Long Beach dig a formidable hit back over and when they set up the next hit during that same series, she dug THAT TOO! OK, one play, but as they say "the way you do anything is the way you do EVERYTHING"...Money on S.Ross....that's all I'm saying.

I like Summer and root for her but I agree with you on virtually all of this. I think Summer gets a break because she is both young and appears much younger than she is, and that may be valid, but my biggest concern is that she has gotten worse this year.

my biggest concern is that she has gotten worse this year. I know you don't agree with me on this, so not sure why I am even bothering, but in my eyes Summer gets a 100% pass this year. I simply cannot imagine going through what she went through this year as a 21 year old and trying to focus on anything, much less training and world class level competition. If we get a couple months into the 2015 season and she isn't showing improvement, I might move more towards your viewpoint. But I refuse to critique anything about her 2014 in terms of desire or commitment given what she had to deal with this year.

klazk: 10-4...Good point. Lost my parents in my 50's and it is devestating for a long period of time...In your VERY early 20's? Hard to believe one can focus on such mundane things like top tier play after an experience like that...I've watched her closely and she's the real deal...may need different coaching etc., but she can bring it and will continue...

Can anyone name any highly ranked females HAND SETTING as good as Summer (or at ALL?)? Summer is SO much smarter than people think, as when I've watched her play over the last couple of years. There is so much parity around the AVP/FIVB, people FORGET that even Walsh/Ross were a couple of points away from leaving the FIVB Long Beach on Friday, only to go on to win. I think people will agree you reach your prime around 28-30 and Summer's almost a decade away from that! Emily is 27, SO, I think we should be seeing much better results soon. I agree. One of the best female beach hand setters I've seen. I just can't assess how good she is, but there's plenty of time to figure that out.
