I hope this continues as an annual tradition, with various former players now coaching.

It doesn't even name the former players who are now coaches. So irritating.

www.collegian.psu.edu/sports/women_volleyball/article_07aca94c-3f8b-11e4-be11-0017a43b2370.htmlHowever, this weekend’s Penn State Alumni Classic offers something that transcends the achievements of women in sport specifically at the university. Each opponent Penn State faces this weekend is coached by a former Nittany Lion. While several players hold head coaching positions across the Division II and III ranks, the only four at the helm of Division I programs will return to Happy Valley this weekend to match up with their former coach, Russ Rose. “I thought it was a great opportunity to highlight four of our players that have gone onto successful coaching careers at the Division I level,” Rose said. “It’s a great chance for them to come back and help us get ready for Big Ten play.” The Eastern Illinois Panthers (5-4) are coached by Katie Price, an outside hitter on the 2007 National Championship team, who spent some time playing professionally overseas before returning to the states to coach. DePaul (2-7) is coached by another former national champion in Nadia Edwards, who took the helm of the Blue Demons in 2010. DePaul wraps up its non-conference schedule this weekend. On Saturday, the Lions take on the University of Illinois at Chicago. The Flames (4-8) are coached by two-time All-American and member of the 1999 National Championship squad Katie Schumacher-Cawley. The Flames play in the Horizon League and look to rebound after dropping four straight matches. The Lions last match against East Carolina (4-0) on Saturday will feature the raising of the 2013 National Championship banner prior to the first serve. The Pirates are coached by Julie Torbett, the most experienced of the four returning alumni. A graduate of the 1990 class, Torbett holds the winningest record in Big South history, boasting 338 wins.

www.collegian.psu.edu/sports/article_3e32bcb4-3f94-11e4-aa8d-0017a43b2370.htmlShould be a fantastic weekend in State College. A weekend to celebrate is not only a way for the alumnae to remember, but Morett-Curtiss said it’s also a time when the current players can truly recognize what it means to be a female athlete at a place like Penn State. Senior volleyball player Micha Hancock has a background of college athletics within her family. Her mother, Kelly, played basketball at Oklahoma State University and her sister, Kelsey, played volleyball for Tulsa University. Hancock said the celebration especially resonates with her. “I’m all about empowering women,” Hancock said of the celebration. “My sister has kind of opened my eyes to feminism and my mom is the same way. She is a powerful woman, does her job well, very independent. The household that I grew up in propelled me to where I am now.”

I laughed at this quote from Rose:
“Well, I would give advice to anybody that asked me, but I wouldn’t offer it unsolicited,” Rose said. “That’s what all the parents and fans are for.”
He forgot the #1 source for unsolicited advice, Volleytalk!

This is a link to all of the matches, rosters, etc. for the Alumni Classic. Russ must not like the DePaul coach. DePaul is scheduled to play two matches on Saturday, with start times only two and a half hours apart. Penn State will play two matches on Friday with start times only three and a half hours apart. For some reason, Depaul and UIC will not play each other. Penn State Alumni Classic

I know DePaul has already played UIC about 2 weeks ago. So the coach might not have wanted to play them again? I would think if he did not like the coach they would not have been invited. I think it is a cool thing having former players as coaches bring their teams. It might not be marquee matchups for Penn State but for the other teams it is, Its a great opportunity for other players to play there. From what i have heard they have been treated great by Penn State players and the school.
