The four teams playing round-robin this week-end in Omaha were Colorado (8-1 PAC-12), Illinois (5-3 B1G), South Dakota (4-5 Summit), and Creighton (6-4 Big East). What order of finish would you predict for this foursome.
As it played out, Illinois wins the tourney with a 3-0 record, SOUTH DAKOTA COYOTES finish second 2-1, Creighton finishes third 1-2, and Colorado finish 0-3.
South Dakota U. (not to be confused with any of those other three Dakota schools) is a member of the Summit League (Denver, Oral Roberts, Ft. Wayne, IUPUI, N. Dakota State, Omaha, S. Dakota State, and Western Illinois).
What a fun team to watch play the game. From high up in the stands they looked to be undersized vs. all three of their opponents. (However looking at their roster they do have some height.)
Led by a very good 5-9 freshman setter, Brittany Jessen, and an all-around solid senior OH, Kendall Kritenbrink, this team gave all three others fits with excellent defense and very smart shot making.
Hats off to the Coyotes on a great week-end!

CU slipped up this weekend. Now headed into the gauntlet of conference play. Hope they pick it up to match what they did last season.

Saw them defeat Colorado on Fri. Very fun team to watch. My understanding is that there head coach wasn't there so at least on Fridsy they were being coached by a 23 year old graduate assistant. The "Yotes" had two players named to the all tournament team, both being from Gretna, NE which is just outside of Omaha. Good for them.

Colorado finished 0-3 in the Creighton Classic. South Dakota looked like they played some decent volleyball. I think they also caught Colorado off guard. The Creighton game was incredible. The amazing thing is that the head coach wasn't there, but South Dakota just hired a new Assistant Coach. She was there and she has been around volleyball for awhile.

The "grad assistant" is Michelle Cole. She played for me at Saddleback Valley VBC in the late 90s, then played 4 years for the Corbellis at Texas A&M, coached at 12 or 2 smaller schools in So. Cal., and was a juniors club director for a few years. She was hired at South Dakota this summer. She graduated from high school in 1998, so she is not 23 years old, but is doing a great job and enjoying her players.

I was given erroneous information regarding who was assuming head coaching duties. Michael Runde IS a grad assistant and IS aprox 23 years of age. Apparently he was NOT the acting head coach this weekend. My mistake.

I was at a few of the USD matches this weekend and it looked like to me like the Graduate Assistant, Michael Runde, was the one involved with running the team, calling the timeouts and running the timeouts. Kuddos to him being a young 23 year old coach and stepping up while their head coach is unable to travel. Also, it was awesome to see some Nebraska kids do some great things at Creighton this weekend!

do they still play their home matches in their football arena? Yep. I think it's pretty cool and unique even if it isn't an ideal situation! Always rooting for the Yotes due to the big MN connection. Jessen, Dimke, Law, etc.

Yes, THE University of South Dakota played some good volleyball. They had a nice showing against Illinois University as well.

I thought it was only the head coach who could call a timeout. There have been a couple of matches I have watched where a very active assistant coach (more animated than the head coach) got so involved with the match that he/she has tried to signal for a timeout to the down official, and the down official has ignored it until the head coach actually calls for the timeout.

How wonderful to see positive comments toward a team and coach on this board.
