Germany comes back from a two-set deficit and 7-2 down in the 5th to defeat Italy for the first final spot of the OG Qualifying Tournament. Italy also wasted two match points at 14-12 thanks to good serving of Atika Bouagaa.
Sets were 15-25 19-25 25-21 25-23 17-15
With this results, unless something is changed by FIVB Italy and Russia will be going to the qualifying tourney in Japan in May.

If one of these two fails to qualify, look for a minor nation to be temporarily suspended from the FIVB due to unstatesmanlike or improper behaviour of the national federation, thus revoking their Olympic qualification, the space to be filled by the team with the next highest world ranking, blah blah...

Agreed!!! (just like they played russia in the african qualifier a while back) This totally completely sucks. CUrrently watching TUR vs POL and watched part of GER vs ITA. All these three teams deserve to be there and only one will be going unfortunately...

Does the FIVB play favorites w/ certain countries over others? Didn't Japan fail to qualify from the previous Olympics? I would think they'd have a lot of sway on a committee given their past successes and their strong fan following.

FIVB does tend to play favorites with certain teams at times (likes passing of Russia for a wild card to WC in favor of Italy and such) but sometimes things just don't happen...
