Does anyone know when the team is chosen to train for the world university games? VBall Magazine (that's the new one by Spike Nashbar) stated that the invitations were supposed to have gone out by the end of March. As far as I know, none have gone out yet. It would be nice to hear from those who receive invitations or from those who have insights into the selection process. BTW. somewhere on this forum somebody stated that the competion at the University Games is at "intermural level" and that the first US gold medal in 2001 was no bid deal. I don't think so. In fact, prior to their departure for Beijing, the 2001 University team beat the US National team during practice matches 4 out of 5 times. I would not classify the US National team as "intramural" level under any circumstances. We can expect our best college players, or those who graduated not more than a year ago, on the list. They should be a formidable force. The US has a great crop of players this year.

Thomas, Ching and Tuyay from Hawaii was invited. The players are asked to send their replies if they plan to attend tryouts this Summer. There is a SARS concern in Korea and throughout Asia. I wouldn't be surprised if the World University Games is "tabled" or "relocated" to another venue. The U.S. Jr. National Team was not selected this year, because the tournament was scheduled to be held in Iran. (That was smart? Of all places to hold it - what are they thinking). The Hawaii players were just in China in November training with the Chinese National Program. I don't know if any of them would still be interested in returning to Asia. Bookumdanoaloha

The college coaches know who was invited from their teams and they are choosing when to tell them. Teams that have finished their season have probably told their players, but haven't made any official announcements yet.
Al Scates revealed that Scott Morrow had been invited after he was injured - he was going to wait until the end of the season to tell him (what I read in the article). I'm sure the other coaches didn't want it to interfere with the rest of their season - it would be a distraction.

Hwy101, can you please post the URL for this listing? I can't locate it anywhere.
(Is it just me or does anyone find the USAA VB site difficult to navigate sometimes.)

My 2 sense, I got it from the USA Rotations Newsletter. The newsletter had a link which I cut and pasted on Volleytalk. The link didn't work that's why I edited my post. USA Volleyball might post it on their website tomorrow. Sorry!

This is all I could find on the USA VB site, at this location: www.usavolleyball.org/natteams/main.htmWorld University Games The International University Sports Federation (FISU) is the organization responsible for the Winter World University Games and a Summer World University Games. Both games are normally held in the same calendar year and occur every two years in the odd number years. The World University Games, also referred to as the Universiade, are organized and staged by an organizing committee in the host city and country, which has been awarded the games. USA Volleyball will participate in the

Andy Hein over Sean Rodgers!! It has to be tough playing middle in the best offense in the country. Andy should be cut the first day and Rodgers should be flying out to colorado.

I'm haven't seen Sean play, but I have seen Andy play 3 times this year, and I've been very impressed with his drastic imporvement over his J.O.s performances last summer. I think he's on a big improvement track. (Either that or Marv has done some real magic with him.)
I do know from reading some articles and seeing quotes that USA VB is wanting to take more of the younger kids who are showing promise for the future and start injecting them into these teams, like many of the international competition teams are doing. Thus the reason the high schoolers are there and perhaps why Andy is there. (But again, Andy, a freshman, is playing well at the college level.) They're all showing promise for the future and the strategy is to give them more exposure to top quality competition so the'll develop faster for the future national teams.
Are there better college players. For sure. It's a guessing game with the younger guys at this stage. Yep.
