The match itself was pretty boring...not much could've made it more exciting...not even the shirtless boys helped.

His analysis is spot on since he clearly knows the game.

I greatly enjoy Al Scates's commentary. Polished? No. Genuine, valuable, interesting? Absolutely. I hate phonies who blather on, but Al Scates, you are the real deal, and I treasure your observations.

He's better than Hannah Werth I thought she did a solid job and had some interesting educational insight. Yes, she did sound a little like the ladies from the SNL NPR skit (which someone else noted), but she didn't sound like the usually 23 year old former players and their various inflections.

For someone who was a tiger on the court, Werth sure has a "mouse" of a voice.

First thing she needs to learn is how to shut up. She would not stop talking, even over the play by play guy. There are a few seconds between points, and she felt that she had to constantly talk, and then some, into the next point. Secondly, i need a lot less of the "see, I told you so!!!" when something she talked about happens. I didn't like her voice either, but I thought that was just me.

Sad that someone would think Scates boring. I'm always pleased when I see he's commenting on a match. Last night he was quite excited when bricio was (finally) set a lower faster ball and crushed it. Most commentators would have totally missed that.

Al is the ONLY reason I leave the audio on. Otherwise my computer generally gets muted quite quickly.

Talking too much is one of the tennants, err, I mean tenets of volleyball journalism.

You can learn a lot listening to Scates' commentary. He is a volleyball genius.

Scates for insight, Sunderland for scolding, Marlowe for excitement.
No one else comes close to their commentary value. The worst are those who gush about players after every good play because they have nothing analytical or interesting to say. Have special distaste for Blanton's fake smile and attitude, dude was a total ass.hole to me once for not passing him the ball fast enough.

Can you imagine a broadcast with Sunderland, Barnett, and Scates? That is what a volleyball broadcast team should be. Unfortunately, I'm sure that ESPN will make us suffer through Nell Fortner again. Do they make Fortner noise canceling headphones with an additional switch for Mowins?
