I cannot understand how there can be too many connected. It is the OFF season, and there are not many posting or reading this time of year. What is really going on??

It has to do with the proboard server. I think Roger had mentioned it before. There are several message boards tied to this one on the server. Even if this one isn't that busy, all the other message boards might be, so it causes that connection error.
