MOSCOW, Idaho—The University of Idaho volleyball team opened Big West Conference action Thursday night with a four game win over Pacific at Memorial Gym. Game scores were 30-26, 30-24, 23-30, and 30-26.
“This is a huge win for us,” head coach Debbie Buchanan said. “Going into this match we knew that our team has definitely matured a lot from last year.”
The Vandals came out aggressively in game one as they built an early 8-2 lead. Pacific would come back to within one at 15-14, but the Vandals were too strong as they hit .286 percent to take game one. Idaho also hit .286 percent in game two and led by as many as eight points.
Game three was a back and fourth battle as the two teams recorded 13 ties, the last coming at 18-18 before Pacific pulled away. The Vandals hit .179 percent in the third game compared to .308 percent for Pacific.
“In game three we came out a little flat but that shouldn’t change the way we play,” Buchanan said. “We need to take care of the ball a little better.”
The fourth game was also back and fourth but the Vandals eventually wore down the Tigers to close out the match. Idaho hit .316 percent in the final game.
“I think we are a more physical team than last year and we finally have some seniors and juniors in our program that can do some things,” Buchanan said.
Kati Tikker led Idaho with a career high 26 kills on .267 attack percent. Sarah Meek and Brooke Haeberle recorded 18 kills apiece for Idaho.
Saxony Brown led the Vandals on defense with a career high 24 digs and Meghan Brown added 23. Mandy Becker recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 19 digs and a career high 69 assists.
As a team Idaho recorded 103 digs and 77 kills on .266 hitting percentage. Pacific recorded 104 digs and 76 kills on .254 hitting percentage.
Pacific (3-3, 0-1 BWC) was led by Ashley Groothuis with 26 kills.
Idaho (6-1, 1-0 BWC) hosts Cal State Northridge on Saturday, Sept. 18th at 2 p.m. in Memorial Gym.
