When a school is hosting a tournament, is it just volleyball games, or do they have dinner/award banquets? Do the teams hang out aside from playing volleyball? I was just wondering because you see the competitiveness when they play, yet they have some respect after the game.

Usually it's just the games and then the teams do things on their own. Or sleep. In some instances the host institution has a luncheon or something, but not normally unless it's a unique situation (Hawaii, NCAA National Championship). And because volleyball is such a small-ish sport, some players know each other and talk when they can, but the teams are there to win, not socialize.
I hope that makes sense.

It really just depends on the tournament, most are fly in, practice the day before, play, play, got to bed, play go home. At the UCSB Judy Bellomo tourney (6-8 teams) they used to have a pre-tourney bbq down at Goleta Beach on Thur. night. The local teams wouldn't show but the out of towners (fly-in) always made it.

For the Hawaii-hosted pre-conference season tournaments, there usually aren't any special get-togethers. Some teams that visit often are all business -- practice and play. Others might schedule something (dinner, a day at the beach) with their alumni supporters here. Still others, who are less frequent or first-time participants, will sometimes come in a day earlier or leave a day later so that their team can have some time to see some of the island. The Wahine booster club also has volunteers to host the visiting teams.

If more than one team is staying at the same hotel, they socialize in the lobby or a nearby night club (if allowed by team rules and such). It's informal. It helps to book rooms at a hotel with a SPACIOUS and COMFY lobby/lounge. After all, these vb kids are TALL and take up a lot of excess space.

The Banker's Classic at UOP during thanksgiving weeken has a luncheon on Friday before tourny play starts. The teams and coaches are all introduced, accolades made, etc, etc. The visiting coaches receive gifts from the sponsoring banks. The Pacific vball boosters are invited to attend as well.
