Bruzdzinski Serves Eight Aces as U-M Improves to 8-0
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan volleyball program set two school records in a 3-0 (30-16, 30-18, 30-24) win over Virginia Tech Friday morning (Sept. 17) in the opening match of the Michigan/Nike Invitational at Cliff Keen Arena. Freshman Katie Bruzdzinski (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North) had a program-best eight service aces, leading U-M to only its second 8-0 start in school history.
Bruzdzinski added 12 kills and nine digs to her eight-ace effort, hitting .440 for the match. Michigan held the Hokies to just .051 hitting thanks to seven blocks from freshman Lyndsay Miller (Ida, Mich./Ida) and three blocks each from Megan Bowman (St. John, Ind./Lake Central), Lisa Gamalski (Milwaukee, Wis./Catholic Memorial) and Erin Cobler (Dexter, Mich./Dexter).
U-M's serving dominated game one as Bruzdzinski turned a close match into a 21-11 lead with four service aces to give the Wolverines the first game.
Freshman Stesha Selsky (Manhattan Beach, Calif./Marymount) found her serving touch in game two, recording an ace and forcing Virginia Tech into two ball handling errors to give U-M an early lead. Bruzdzinski added four aces to the cause, including service aces on the final two points to help U-M take game two.
Michigan will play Western Michigan in a nightcap at 7:30 p.m. tonight.

U-M Head Coach Mark Rosen
How significant is the team's 8-0 start? ... "I didn't know it until you just told me. I don't think it's significant at all. It's a different schedule every year. We're just trying to get better and worry about tonight's match."
What are the challenges of playing in-state non-conference rivals like WMU?... "This is going to be a big challenge for us. It's a big opportunity for them to come in and play against a Big Ten team. They've got nothing to lose and everything to gain. This is a match that they've probably got circled on their schedule. So I think it's going to be a tough match for us."
What has been the number one component of the team's early success? ..."There's a few things that I can point to as components of our success early in the season. Our work ethic--This team will work to improve every day. I like our chemistry. These girls feed off each other and communicate very well. Also our athleticism--We're a young team and as we get more experience the girls' athleticism can come into play."
Comment on the team's serving ..."We served well in the match as a team, but obviously Katie (Bruzdzinski) was a huge factor. She had one span where she served six or seven points in a row. In game three our serving dropped off somewhat, but with nine aces against seven errors that's pretty good."
