Wisconsin takes game one 30-20 Badgers hit .316 to UVA's .184 Odenthal seems to be out of her slump a bit... 8 kills, hitting .636 (wonder if Pete Waite pondering benching her in place of Amy Bladow sparked that...) Shaw has 4 kills on 6 swings with no errors, Wack with 7 digs. Game two about to start: www.uwbadgers.com/live/vb/quick.htm

The Badgers really put together a nice match tonight. Game ball goes to the Wisconsin block, just because it was great to have one that was such a factor. The Badgers just dominated for the most part. Virginia didn't pass well at all, partly because the Badgers were serving various nastiness at them all night (Aubrey with the knuckler, Simpson short, Odenthal and especially Shaw with the heat). Thus, the offense was slow and the Badgers were camped on the hitters. 13 total blocks, several hitting errors caused by attempts to hit around the block, and a lot of balls blocked back to the other side and kept in play. The great thing was that everyone got involved. Aubrey didn't do much offensively, but she served tough and had a couple of great blocks, in addition to some nice digs. Reineke is one of those kinds of players who annoys the heck out me when on other teams because she doesn't hit it all that hard but was able to get some kills. She is very long on the block, though. The passing had a few breakdowns but was better overall. Simpson looked a lot more comfortable running the offense. Shaw just dominated on the backslide. Once, the set drifted too far out on it, but she still somehow hit it crosscourt for a kill, landing on her backside but celebrating from there. She hit at least three of the "everyone goes ooh" type balls, one when UVa tied game three at 7. Overpasses were whacked. It was cool. Also, the Badgers seem less susceptible to offspeed hits. Only one play with everyone looking at each other. Virginia didn't really help themselves. Sarah Kirkwood is a nice player; they did a decent job of moving her around somewhat on attacks when they could, but they just really struggled on serve receive. They also missed a ton of serves, which was really significant in game one. Still, the Badgers looked pretty good, and DEFENSE was a big part of it. Yay! I wonder if Rich Kern has fixed the score on this one (UVa didn't win). On the other hand, Marshall did actually beat Cincy, coming back from a 2-0 deficit. I think it is a plot to make all Badger tournament games start really late. We are now 3-3 in having five game matches before the Badgers play at home this season.
