I'm really curious about Hannah Juley's game:
Crazy situation being behind the best setter in the NCAA for two years and then fighting for playing time with at least a top-three 2017 setter in Hilley who is 6-feet as a sophomore with an ever-expanding game.
Juley could probably instantly contribute at a lot of schools. She's one of the most technically sound setters in the class of 2015, an All-American, and I believe she was also trained as a hitter? I've heard good things about her defense, but I'm wondering if Sheff trains her as a DS contributor and backup setter if she doesn't red shirt. Does anyone know about her defensive skills?

According to the press around Signing Day, Hannah was on the verge of committing elsewhere when Sheffield saw her at a tournament. He'd come to see Saunders play (they are on the same club team). He noticed Juley's dad, a Wisconsin alum, had a Bucky Badger cellphone case, and struck up a conversation. Hilley hadn't signed with the Badgers yet when Hannah committed here. That said, she committed knowing she would be behind LC, so Sheff had to have painted Hannah a picture of what he envisioned her role to be. I'm sure those conversations continued after Hilley's verbal. I envision a knock-down drag-out for the role of heir apparent.

Sheffield sure has a way with words...
Regarding Frankunderwood, he would be very proud to know he has the volleytalk masses, "bamboozled", I'm sure.

Has anyone seen this video of Brooke Morgan? I get that it's high school pre-season, but she really knows how to throw down. I hope this translates well into college. Pretty decent group with Williams, Nelson, Blake, and Morgan, no?

Katie Slay with a little more speed? A few years of collegiate training on the vertical and strength...wow!

A few years of collegiate training on the vertical and strength...wow! I was so surprised. I knew she was talented, but she has great speed for her size. I also liked her setter who I see is going to UNI in the fall. So excited for this season and the future!

As rainbowbadger said earlier, please, weather gods, bless us with good weather the Saturday before the season so we can get a glimpse of what the Badgers have on hand at that point. Until then, Badger fans just won't know. I hope that everyone can get healthy and fight it out for court time, because I think that that can bring out the best in everyone and put the strongest grouping on the floor. I will always respect Morales for not only what she did her junior season and the huge kills to end the match versus Texas when they had made things tough for her all night, but also for playing her decreased role to the best of her abilities and not blowing up the team last season. It probably wasn't easy for her, but she still came up big in some big matches and helped the Badgers be the best team they could be.

D-NH must have been pretty good to miss her for the season and still do so well. I'm really hoping she settles in nicely and quickly at UW, but still think Williams and Nelson will go M1 and M2. I think the arsenal of potential hitters is more exciting than the past 2 seasons although I say that with 8 freshmen and seeing Kriskova for a minute. You'd think a 50% new team would force Sheffield to sub more... I re-watched the PSU/Stanford semi last night and Rose just has the luxury of subbing hitters for days.

Badger fans are looking through Sheffield-colored glasses in my opinion. I think Morgan will become a quality Big Ten player, but nothing about this video makes me run out and buy Badger season-tickets.

Pretty decent group with Williams, Nelson, Blake, and Morgan, no? The one thing I was hoping to see in this video after watching her play in person is her defensive shifts right or left. She has a powerful swing, a very good serve and is a force in the middle. However when the sets were to the sides on the other side of the net she was very slow in moving over for the double and usually a few steps late. This highlight reel showed nothing of her shifting for the double block which is something they are going to have to hammer on in practices. Great kid full of potential, she just needs work on her defense away from the middle

Based on experience so far, looking through those Sheffield colored glasses is like looking through, well, just glasses. He's been pretty close to bang on in his evaluation of players...not simply what they are, but what they can become. Granted, we do have limited experience to go on. I agree with Bucky's heat above...we don't see much of her defense in these videos. That's the thing that takes longest to develop and probably where Sheff thinks he has the most work to do.

No disrespect to Sheff, but I'm curious if Wisconsin's success will continue after Carlini's graduation. Remember Cal post-Carli Lloyd? Didn't think so. Prior to Carlini’s arrival, Wisconsin went 5-15 in the conference; when I saw the match against the Huskers in 2012, I regrettably thought Wisconsin would be another fluff opponent in the B1G like Iowa. However, once Carlini took the reins, the Badgers turned their record around, finishing fourth in the conference by going 12-8. Last year the Badgers were 19-1, and I won’t even say anything about their schedule relative to the other schools that had winning records. Anyway, I’m not sure if another setter would have had the same type of success for Wisconsin; that is, do we really believe that hitters like Thompson, Morales, and Chapman would have gotten the job done with a mediocre setter? I look forward to this fall and 2017, as both years will reveal how good Carlini and Sheff really are for Wisconsin. This year, Carlini’s hitters will be frosh and rookies, but I’m actually confident Wisconsin will still prevail, not because I believe the new hitters are going to dominate, but because Carlini will still do what she does best: diversifying the offense, delivering the ball on the dime at a fast tempo, pulling the opponent’s block on jump sets, and putting up formidable blocks against the opposing left sides. Once she graduates and Sheff is left with a new setter (and tenured hitters), it will be interesting to see if Wisconsin maintains a winning tradition, or if they’ll suffer the same fate of Cal without Lloyd. Personally, I hope Wisconsin stays toward the top, because it only makes the B1G that much stronger.
