Dear John Cook....what happened to scheduling some spring games out west so this end of the state could get a look at the team? I would appreciate it...thanks in advance. I think Nebraska needs a new coach. I know, you guys probably think I'm crazy, but he makes the team very hostile I feel. He never has positive emotions. I think they need a new coach like Hambly someone young and that can get these girls excited again. The program has great players and future recruits, but their communication and team spirit seem low. There's only so much a coach can do to improve communication. Individuals are essentially "them", and that's very hard to change.

While I am not a fan of Cook, I do think he does a good job of preparing his team/players. That said the look he gives to Dani during a match and her reaction is not always good. Kind of like a dog about to get hit with a rolled up newspaper. I also look forward to the day when he does step down. I think Pettit will have a hand in selecting the next coach. I've been one of Cook's most boisterous critics over the years, but he’s redeemed himself quite a bit in my eyes. The Q&A with Petit certainly was good PR, especially to all of the fans that were in an uproar over the year he started Lauren in a 6-2 with Sydney. There was an article that ran a couple years ago that talked about Cook’s struggle with anxiety in the years following 2007, and that, coupled with Petit’s Q&A, really humanized Cook and portrayed him as a family man with a passion for not just Nebraska volleyball but for volleyball at large. However, what really changed my mind about Cook happened on the night we played Hofstra in the first round of the NCAA tourney last season. An older, African American lady who sits near us at the games was crying and people were trying to figure out what happened. Apparently, she had just retired that day, and her boss, who’s really close with Cook, told him about his retiring employee who’s been going to every home match for the past 15 years. Cook, out of the goodness of his heart, wrote her a loooooong letter from his personal stationary congratulating her on her retirement and thanking her for being a wonderful fan. I never would have imagined Cook to do something like that, and the way it moved that lady and the people sitting beside her completely reshaped the way I regard him—not only as a person but as a coach. Speaking about him as a coach, I also appreciate how he moved the team to the Devaney, because not only is the program making a profit now, but the decision to move helped make a high-demand sport more accessible to the fans by nearly doubling the seating capacity. Additionally, I think some of his critics will be biting their tongues in the years to come, because I believe Nebraska will finally be back in FF conversations for the rest of the decade with the recruits he’s been able to bring in, which I also attribute to the allure of the Devaney, which wouldn’t have come without his support. Last, I’ve noticed that in both the women’s and men’s games, across all levels from professional and national to collegiate and club, some of the best coaches are those that don’t have the friendliest of demeanors on the court during games, so I’m gonna give him a break when it comes to the way he behaves, because he's certainly not the only successful coach who gets heated on the sideline.

I think it's taken Nebraska a little while to adjust. Playing in Big 12 and Big 10 are not the same thing. You worry about Texas in one conference. The other there's a lot of teams that can beat you if not playing well.

The circumstances of Pettit leaving and Cook leaving will be totally different given the administration and status of the program. Cook wouldnt also wouldnt need Pettit to point him towards CJL as a possible successor.

I think Johnson-Lynch would be on a very short list when the time comes.

I think Johnson-Lynch would be on a very short list when the time comes. I love how she develops passers and setters. However, there are still others that I think are qualified to take over after Cook retires.

While we're talking about possible successors to Coach Cook, I'd like to throw out Dan Meske's name. I'm really impressed with how he seemed to connect with the players during the China trip (I'm speaking of his Youtube channel). Those kinds of relationships precisely fits the Nebraska brand. I also think he's a smart coach who players will listen to and respect.

Agreed. Meske, Skinner and Rose are three of Nebraska's greatest assistant coaches IMO.
