UCLA and Penn State are too high. Ball State is too low. UC Irvine is a mystery but they looked impressive so far. Byu is also too high.

I dont' know about the Cali teams except for UCSB (which got there butts kicked by IPFW on Sunday) but I do disagree with Ball State being that high. I have seen them play and they only have Denmark plus they have a good setter. Their outsides aren't that strong and serving is kinda weak.

How did UCI get a vote for #1? Are they that good? What's the dealio here?

My guess is that Mike Wilton voted for UCI. He told one of the newspapers that he would only vote for his team if he saw them play better (can someone post exactly what he said, I'm kinda going by memory). He said he didn't vote Hawaii #1 last week, and I don't think there was enough improvement last weekend to sway his vote.

i think uci is getting their vote from scates. he figures he has the best team and since they lost twice to uci, uci should be number 1.

As far as Scates goes I think it would be better for him to vote Hawaii #1. That way they get two chances to knock off the top team instead of just one.

He said he didn't vote Hawaii #1 last week, and I don't think there was enough improvement last weekend to sway his vote. According to the Honolulu-Starbulletin today, it seems that Wilton gave UH a first place vote this time around. Not sure who gave UCI a first place vote, but, my guess would be Al Scates. Posted at 10:35 a.m., Tuesday, January 21, 2003 UH men's volleyball team retains No. 1 rank By Stephen Tsai Advertiser Staff Writer The University of Hawai'i men's volleyball team retained its No. 1 ranking in this week's USA Today/American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. "Unless they were going to give it to Shanghai, it was no surprise," UH coach Mike Wilton said. The defending national champion Warriors are 4-0 this season, with their only loss coming in an exhibition to Shanghai Oriental on the final night of the Outrigger Hotels Invitational. (That outcome did not count against the Warriors' record.) Six members of China's national team played for Shanghai, which practices up to six hours every day. Wilton, who is a voting member, this time picked UH No. 1. In all, the Warriors received 15 of 16 first-place votes. UC Irvine (6-0), which has defeated 18-time national champion UCLA twice this season, placed second, receiving the other No. 1 vote. UCLA placed third, followed by Brigham Young and Cal State Northridge. The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation, of which UH is a member, placed seven teams in the top 10. The Warriors are scheduled to play 14 of 15 teams in the poll this season.

How does the AVCA poll work. like how many teams does each coach vote for etc.

The AVCA selects "x" number of coaches from around the country to vote every week. Each coach turns in his top 15. There is a point system attached to the ranking. When the poll is released, the voting matrix is released with it to the voting coaches, showing how each coach voted.

I don't think that's the whole question. I think the poster was also wondering how much weight each place carries. For example, two teams with #1=2pts, #2=1pt. I remember seeing it somewhere on the AVCA site, but I think someone else should go find it.

the AVCA selected 16 coaches and at the end of every week, the 16 coaches turn in their top 15.
if a team is placed at #1 on a coaches poll, then they receive 15 points. #2 gets 14 points, and so on and so forth until #15 gets 1 point.
had hawaii gotten all 16 first place votes, they would've gotten 240 points instead of 239, so you can see by the voting that hawaii got 15 #1 votes and 1 #2 vote.
this is the math geek in me coming out.

Well, if you think the women's AVCA poll is a mystery, the men's AVCA poll is even a bigger mystery. I would just wait until the NCAA finals to see who is the number one team.
